I love how the edge seems to be a different type of metal/differently textured metal, and looks as if it's embedded in the axe. Like a gem in a setting, or something.
As if the blacksmith said "This stuff is so hard we can't really shape it into anything, but I'll just build an axe around this crescent piece you found".
Based on the colours I'd say it's a rusty copper axe, with an adamantium blade.

Actually, I envisioned it like that because I figured adamantine wafers would be molded into a shape which would look much like a normal metal, but since the blade edge is separately treated and polished, it would have a different texture to it, with much more pronounced "wafers". But your variant is fine too. :)

Your wafer texture is recognizable :) That's exactly how I envision adamantine wafers.

It kinda reminds me of the texture of carbon fiber string instruments, just with finer strands. And that's awesome.

I think most photos of caves I've seen have kind of lame colors. Probably because they use artificial lighting and the subject matter is basically just rock walls Usually limestone or something like that, since most caves are caused by the rock getting dissolved by water. Basically just bland off-white. And the conditions are usually cramped and otherwise terrible for photography. I quick search of Wikimedia Commons brought up a whole bunch of pics, but you said your internet was gimped, so I guess you can't look at them?
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (There's plenty more there, which probably won't help you, due to aforementioned internet thing.)
Some of the rock formations are very pretty, but colors are basically dirty brown, dirty shadowy dark brown, dirty off-white, and black. In the ones taken against a cave entrance, you get a mix of searing white and almost black that might as well be monochrome. What's wrong with using black, by the way?
So none of those look deep red to you? Even the first one?

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Not really, no. Reddish brown, maybe, but not red. I think the best color to describe the first one would be "caramel", inasmuch caramel is a color.

More detail on the dwarf... I'm starting to think the face is too big.

edit: also, something seems wrong with the left arm.

Sean: Nature is the greatest teacher. Maybe you should try to get someone to replicate the pose for a photo, with similar lighting.

I painted this a while ago and finally decided to post it since I haven't posted anything here in a long time.

Sean, good picture, but I'm not sure what's going on with that axe. Specifically, what angles his hands are gripping it. His left hand looks like it's pointing towards the viewer while the right hand is pointing more towards the side. This axe has a curved handle.

Or a rubber grip. Hehe.

I know this is an engravers guild, but I wondered if a nice 3D model is also a worthwhile addition to the thread. So,...

The underside is 'under' development for the moment.

I think the right thruster is a bit shorter distance away from the main body, than the left one.

They're exactly the same, believe me. It's just the perspective.
