Seems more like a person with an abstract body.

Yeah, the body is more abstract.

Maybe if I left in the bottom edge it would be more obvious.

EDIT:

On second thought, that is way too wide to look like a neck.

Thanks for those links Spreggo, after reading that stuff i tried to apply some of it, trying to go by the emphasis logic, sharpy for stuff i want to pop and less sharpy for background noise :)

For some reason the background stands out more than the foreground in the first one. Try to sharpen everything, I dunno.

Jopax: I think the black cliff hillside kind of jumps up. The texture's too high-contrast. The structures are more or less white on black, which is great. It's really obvious that they're the important thing here. The background behind them, though, is presumably supposed to be in the background, and the light gray blotches on black draw way too much attention. I'd suggest some kind of softer gradient from near-black next to the light buildings to drab gray near the sky. I think the foreground looks pretty good as-is.

Yes - Atmospheric perspective means that detail and contrast should decrease as distance from the viewer increases.

edit: you can also use it to strategically soften edges and details in order to reduce the attention elements grab.

Just realised that I am going offline in about 30 minutes for a week.
