Tablets aren't really portable since they have to be plugged into a computer anyways. If you mean a tablet PC, be ready to drop 3k USD on one with decent pressure sensitivity.
What I mean is that a tablet doesn't make its user more skilled. People act like they won't drive a car until they can afford a Ferrari.

A tablet and a small laptop is STILL more portable than a scanner and a small laptop.

And tablets are just sexy! These days, they work on electro-magnetic induction! There's some coils in the tablet, and some coils in the stylus, and the computer determines the pen position from minuscule changes in the current! It's MAGIC! I AM USING TESLA'S GHOST FOR INK!

But yeah, our modern graphite pencils and mass-produced wood pulp paper are quite sufficient for drawing stuff. And you can easily buy even more sophisticated tools. Problems only arise when you want to share all that stuff with the internet. We really have it cozy here in the Future. Back in the day, if you wanted to use decent colors you had to get nine different kinds of heavy metal poisoning.

I mean, why should you carry digital drawing stuff with you? You can always carry a notebook, and upload stuff whenever you have access to a computer.

Pencil is for practice and sketching/ light drawing that doesn't require colour.
A tablet is more for when your drawing an actual picture, due to the better variety of brushes and the ability to colour it. At least in my opinion.

A generic robot/cyborg logo made with extensive use of layers for easy future editing. Again, if anyone has any logos or flags they need and I can get away with geometric shapes I'll happily make it.

In short, people, tablets are great for drawing stuff from imagination/photo reference at home, or small, indoor objects from observation, but there's not much of a choice if you go out into nature to draw/paint other than traditional media.
