Screw pumps and other races
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:36:15 pm »

I made a human settlement and realized that I couldn't make a screw pump due to the fact that humans can't build enormous corkscrews.

I looked in the raws and noticed this bit of code under the dwarf entity:

[trAPCOMP:ITEM_TRAPCOMP_ENORMOUSCORKSCREW]

So, the reason humans can't build enormous corkscrews is because they don't want to use them in their traps (I suppose elaborate/gruesome traps aren't their thing). However this also means they can't build giant corkscrews period, removing their ability to pump water.

This means that any race (custom or not) that doesn't want to use super-deadly traps is also unable to pump water. This doesn't really make sense to me. A race that is able to engineer things (like humans) should be able to build giant corkscrews, just not be allowed to use them in traps if such is specified.

One solution would be to make a new trap component with low damage, which could be used in screw pumps.  Give this to civilizations if you want to be able to build pumps when playing them, but not to make giant corkscrew traps.

Call it a pump core, or some such.

That, or you could just turn down the damage from giant corkscrews. Those things doing as much damage as a spear doesnt realy make sense anyway.

You would best do it this way; tune down the damage done by giant corkscrews, and give dwarves a new trap component like "ominous drill bit" that acts like the current screws.

This is because most likely the need for a giant corkscrews is hard coded into the pump.

I would guess that's determined by the [IS_SCREW] tag, which none of the other trap components have.

Could be that humans just aren't supposed to be able to pump water

You have obviously never played a game such as Mortal Kombat or something where there is a giant grinder made from two giant corkscrews that rotate towards each other to COMPLETELY SHRED THE ENEMY...

damage factor for spears= 10/10
damage factor for CScrews= dude....look at all the blood /10

math says it all....

'K'ombat. :D

Also: humans are primitives who never learned to move off the plains. They... live aboveground. It makes sense that they don't have the tech to pump water.

And yet they can become mechanics and build windmills and such..

However, wouldn't this problem cross over to any custom race? No gruesome traps equals no pumping water..

What would happen if you made an object that had the [IS_SCREW] tag?  As its not a trap component you can't use it in traps, but would it pump water?

Why would humans be opposed to greusome traps anyways?  Humanty has developed some impressively greusome stuff, and much of it is pre-1400.

oops.... forgot that... i was tired....its fixed now....

as for them not learning to move off plains... have you never heard of irrigation? that was one of the many scientific advances in the world that allowed us to go from hunter-gatherers to fat lazy camp-squatters, then to the eventual warring and gaming city freaks.... :D

hell look at modern bondage......thats pretty gruesome in itself...
