My point exactly.  We don't ask Italy to pay reparations to Israel for the actions of the Roman Empire, why heap all this virulence on Britain and America for stuff nobody alive had anything to with.  It is possible to discuss the crimes of the past without trying to blame living people for them just because they happen to live the in modern extension of the originally responsible nation.

Because we currently have a culture of guilt for some inconceivable reason.

I DEMAND REPARATIONS.

Actually America brought a lot of good stuff and actually let us run our country, which was unprecedented. Well, Filipinos we have some unfortunate remnants of those times (like the belief that if it's from the US it's BETTAR) but all in all it was a net gain. (except for the genocide. anyway that only happened once.)

I think Mark Twain wrote a really angry essay about American imperial ambitions, but I'm not too sure.

Empire might be pretty inhuman and exploitative, but there's a little man smoking a pipe and wearing tweed inside me who glows with pride whenever he sees an old map where over a quarter of the world is painted red. The fact that the British empire was always red on maps is kind of ironic, considering the amount of blood spilled over the 3 or 4 centuries it existed as a proper empire.

For awhile there it was even a good thing; the earlier days of the British Empire revolved around colonising and growth. Natives were assimilated into the Empire (and exploited a bit, but that was alright back then.)

It was only in the latter days when the Empire turned in upon itself and forgot that the purpose of setting up colonies in new lands was to bring new peoples into the Empire, assimilate and educate them into a reasonable approximation of Englishmen and started just wantonly exploiting everything in reach that it all started to come apart on them. And then America went all civil warry and everything fell over.

Actually the civil war began because the government decided it wanted Americans to pay taxes, as the previous governments hadn't really bothered to enforce taxes or duties.

Ok, after bogging though this flame bait trap, I would like tell all of you, regardless of country of origin, a little truth:

It's everyone's fault, so stop pointing at others faults while your own are only getting worse.

And to make this argument even more irrelevant, it's nobody's fault, since no one on this forum and probably nobody alive had any hand in making happen the things metaphysical national guilt is being thrown around for.

Or, due to the nature of time travel, at all.

Some have speculated that it will be impossible to travel back past the time when time travel was invented.  I kinda hope it's true, since if one is invented all kinds of hell are suddenly going to break loose :P.
