America is a superpower because we had the opportunity to expand our borders to a large area, most of which is resource rich.  America is a very resource rich country, and we got to start to exploit those advantages at the start of the industrial revolution.

Hehe, in all fairness, the US of A could have had a great empire once, but when they started the age of empires was already over.

Still, after the fuckup they just lived through and the depression combined, I think everyone was okay with America getting it good.

'Course, the 50s were the era of sexual repression, constant fear of communists and just repression in general. It was the 60s when things really began to swing.

Actually, for the first fifty or so years, the British Empire was nicking the natural resources to use in their giant furnaces and so on.

The big reason that America became a superpower was because it industrialized, and then World War 1 hit and took out the entire industrialized world with it, EXCEPT America; Europe sunk into a depression, we followed, but still had the basic infrastructure, and then World War 2 hit, took out the entire industrialized world AGAIN, while America had, during the war, developed a self-sustaining economy of fantastic proportions, as well as nukes and the largest, most well-funded military of the time.

Yeah, although it's partially to show that it's kinda pointless to blame the British for everything.  A lot of bad things happened in the past, it may be best just to move on.

My point exactly.  We don't ask Italy to pay reparations to Israel for the actions of the Roman Empire, why heap all this virulence on Britain and America for stuff nobody alive had anything to with.  It is possible to discuss the crimes of the past without trying to blame living people for them just because they happen to live the in modern extension of the originally responsible nation.
