On topic: Obama made a comment like everything the American president does it got blown out of proportion. I don't really see what made this topic worthy.

I just think when you're the president and you know everything you say will get blown out of proportion, it takes a fair bit of cojones to call someone a jackass (even if most people agree).

Yeah, as the most right-leaning of all the Great Old Ones, I'm embarrassed by some of the things I see people saying in response to Obama stuff.  Some of the criticisms I've heard are absurd, and I know a thing or two about absurd criticisms, I somehow managed to get caught up into it around election time.  Never again.

On a related note, there's a recent Cracked article on what history textbooks will say about Obama in 100 years.  It's pretty funny.

Smart, but nowhere near funny enough.  Ya gotta tell some real jokes at some point.

On Topic:  It does matter what the President says because of who he is and what he stands for.  If you allowed people to decide how great a person is by what "cool thing" he said we may as well nominate the next wrestling champion and fulfill the Idiocracy theory.  This goes for Kanye as well, but not so much... because he's not representing us as a people.  When Obama leaves office then he can say whatever he wants.

Um, Andir, just because someone's famous and powerful doesn't mean they're inhuman.  He was supposed to be off the record.  As in, not making an official statement.  Is the President not allowed to have a personal opinion on pop culture?

Oh well, my mistake.  I suppose all his opinions must be expressed through legislation. :P

I'm pretty sure he has to watch everything he says carefully. Off the record or not, he's going to affect things by what he says.

Does that mean he should forever be forbidden for calling people out when they're being a jackass?

Ah sarcasm, how I love you so.

He certainly isn't going to affect things to that degree, but no matter what, if he has a personal opinion on something, it'll cause a media shitstorm and affect him politically, in a good or bad way. So he has to watch what he says to the media.

Very true, if one day he said "I choose Pepsi over Coca Cola", the wild shift in sales would destroy Coca Cola, or at least severely damage it, while making Pepsi huge. It's the same with Oprah, she refused to say anything about who she was for before the election because she knew that so many of her viewers would just follow her and that could have a negative effect on the democratic process, her influence being that widespread.

Most celebrities would use their influence to get their fans to vote for people they wanted in office. If they cared enough. Oprah's opinion would probably win at least ten thousand votes, though.

Did we all forget the kegger summit?  He chose a Bud Light.  You don't see Budwiser knocking off all their competition with ads calling themselves "The President's Beer" do you?

Probably because your average Bud drinker thinks Obama is really a Wahabist Kenyan, but the point still stands.
