That would be interesting, if he lives, he will be able to make money off of it. Now for a command.

> Even though the book says that the pheonix ashes in your possession are the key to releasing the wizard('s corpse), you think that perhaps going back to the cottage and examining the enchantment first might yield some interesting information (of multiple types). Return to cottage, close eyes, and concentrate on seeing the shape of the magic at work (euclidean or not).

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

the book doesn't say that the phoenix ashes are the key. it says that a phoenix has to go through the process of bursting into flames and being reborn, while on top of the ice.

Oh, so put the ashes on the wizicle, put a flame to them, and if the phoenix returns, kill it.

It depends, if the Phoenix is huge and hostile, kill it.
If its small and friendly, make it adopted fire starter.

what you have is simply the remnants of the reincarnation process. the phoenix is long gone.

Wait a minute... that mirror can take us to different planes, right?
Where better to find a phoenix than in the plane of fire!

Not Armok. Plane of fire might be interesting, but we can try my command first. Also, a phoenix can always be reborn from the ashes, you can't really kill it unless you throw the ashes in a river. We have the ashes, the phoenix can be reborn! (Or cloned, if you want to look at it that way.)
After examining the enchantment with mage-sight (or whatever sense dragons use), we will either go with Dragnar's suggestion if the spell structure is too complicated or we use our mirror's plane abilities to sever the spells ether-link (if it's using that shape anyway).

Right, but the ashes we have are what's left over when the phoenix is reborn.

Proenix + fire = baby phoenix + ashes

>examine demon ice with mage sight_

you examine the demon ice. the spell around it causes millions of tiny portals to open and close all around the ice block. it's practically a strobe light effect and it's giving you a headache.

>Use mirror to sever link through planes_

you try and use the mirror to break the teleportation spell. but since you don't know how to use the mirror you really just experiment. you try focusing your eyes on the mirror, you try waving it around the ice, you try shooting it with lightning. nothing happens at all.
