Empty brook?
« on: September 16, 2009, 03:20:03 pm »

So do some brooks just not refill when they're emptied?  I tapped my brook for water for my cistern, and it's been low ever since (have closed my floodgates).  I'm trying to drown an orc in it but it doesn't seem to fill past 5/7 at that spot and further down the river it's as low as 2/7!

It's been like this for quite some time, so do some brooks just not refill?  Never had this happen before.

Edit:  Oh and while we're on the subject:  how do you tell which way a brook is flowing?  I had several orcs in my brook (hence why one is still there) and took out a few with crossbows but have since run out of bolts.  Well, when they bloodied all over my brook, the blood flowed BOTH ways?  It started in one direction but then reversed flow upstream.  Is this normal?

The exit off your map with more water is the direction the water comes from, and the exit with less water is where the water flows.

Are you on a really hot map? It could be that the water is evaporating in the process of flowing through the river.

If the brook switched directions (indicated by blood flow) it may be because of your cistern + evaporation.

Say the brook flows like this:

-------------->
   |

Where | is the cistern. If the water is evaporating most of the flow could end up going to the cistern causing the water downstream to be able to backflow.

So at some point your brook may have looked like 6664322234555566
Where the 2's and 3's are where part of the brook is flowing back into the cistern. The further down part of the brook would then be capable of flowing backwards right?

Ah, that makes sense.  Yes it's a hot environment.

Sooo...will it eventually refill just at a slow rate?  Will it fill faster in Winter?

It's constantly filling, it's just constantly evaporating just as fast. Brooks, rivers, oceans, and aquifers are sources of infinite water, even in the middle of the Sahara desert, a single brook will provide you with as much water as you can find use for. Enjoy it, water is almost as valuable as magma to dwarven society.

Yah well that brook was the death of me.  I could dump all the orcs I wanted into it and they'd never drown since the water wasn't 7/7.  No way to get rid of the orcs after that.  They wouldn't path out and I couldn't path anything in.  My crossbowmen could only kill the wrestlers and at a point they sent their own bowmen in masse which I definitely couldn't take down, so I had to succumb.

Shame too because it was one of my better pre-80 sieging forts.

Next time build a drowning chamber. Construct a long hallway with two bridges on either end and raise them when the orcs get inside, then fill with water. When you want the orcs gear, simply pump the water out or open one of the bridges. A trap like that will effectively wipe out entire armies if done properly. Just be careful not to let any through unless you have a trained military, a single orc is strong enough to wipe out an entire fortress of civilians (though a legendary wrestler can easily take an orc one on one, and a legendary weapon user can carve a path through the entire orc military).
