Walls on slope?
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:11:28 am »

I've build a wall on a slope in a project to make an above ground garden. Would enemies manage to walk up from it?

Also, although I've removed the upward slopes on the garden, I didn't wall off the level above. Enemies wouldn't drop down from above, would they?

So the slope, and the wall are right next to each other on the same z level?

If so, yes, the slope will act as a ramp to your wall,  somehow.

Actually, no.

I designated a wall ON a downward slope. They managed to build it, somehow.

So, directly below the wall is a slope.

In my experience, no, nothing can get through the wall-over-ramp.

I'm not sure about the second part though, I don't know if enemies are actually capable of dropping down off a wall.
In any case, remember that if you face off against archers, they will shoot right over the wall, so you will want to evacuate and lock your farm during sieges anyway. (don't roof over it either, otherwise outdoor plants wont grow anymore)

Perhaps a screenshot might be handy?

Or is it something like this:

Code: [Select]
Side View

 X___
_/

X - Wall
_ - Floor
/ - Ramp

In that case, enemies will not walk down it. To walk down a ramp, you need to be able to move onto the tile directly above the ramp. And in that case, theres a wall on that tile. So it should work.

If its
Code: [Select]

They wont go dowm.
However, goblins could shoot your dwarves if they're armed with crossbows

Yeah, the first one looks like the lower part.

The 2nd pic kinda looks like the upper part. No walls on the upper part though, so:

Code: [Select]
  _
__

Nothing that could be done about the crossbowers? Roofing it prevents (above ground) farming right?

Not if you make the farms first.

Also, it's easy to stop the goblins from shooting the dwarves inside, just build another wall around the aboveground area, they won't be able to shoot through that.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

I coulda sworn you could roof over outdoor farms.  As long as it has the tile has the Outdoor tag then it should work.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

If the tiles have ever been outside, you can grow outdoor crops.

well, for the roofing problem, as long as your area is within 20 tiles in one direction, you could build drawbridges over the garden. In peace, you can have them open to let your dwarfs work on their tans. But during a siege, you can drop the bridges sports stadium style and protect your population from a deadly rain.

I do this all time for my skylight in my dining room. Works pretty well, it convince me to make the dining room the main level area. Fast reaction times.
