Lots of ?s

Will tower caps grow on muddied constructions? Rock roads?
Can bolts pass through Fortifications vertically?
Is there a pro/con difference between a meeting hall and a statue garden?
Can you build workshops on bridges?

Yes, and no.
Dunno.
Statue gardens create parties. Meeting zones don't.
Nope.

As for that third one, a "Meeting Hall" as designated from a table or well is functionally identical to a statue garden, and both cause parties.

"Meeting Zones," as designated via the Zones (i) menu, are similar, but do not cause parties.

Confusing? Nah.

Bolts will not pass through carved fortifications vertically(Since they will have a floor above/below them)

I'm unsure of constructed fortifications.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

But will they pass vertically through grates?

... Although, come to think of it, I never did test my ballista-through-the-portcullis defense.  Goblins never got past the traps up front, and I'm too stingy with my ballista bolts.  I'm pretty sure ranged weapons go through grates just fine, though.  Just... never tested it vertically.

Anyway.  My point is:  If fortifications won't do what you need, try grates.  Although the grates have the disadvantage of not being indestructible like walls.

Grates, yes. Fort'ns, no.

That's how they're designed.  Bars too, both vertical and horizontal.

Learn something new everyday, that is pretty fricken awesome, I am going to have to try that, in fact that might even be yet another unbeatable defence, have a military level above or below an area of a fort and build grates to turn your entrance hall into a marksdwarf's playground, the very idea is pretty cool.

To be clear, I was talking about whether arrows would pass vertically thru bars and grates, not that they defend against arrows.  That's the question as asked.

Bars and grates provide no defense.

1. Not sure.
2. I think so, just be forwarned that they may cause your shots to miss more often.
3. Meeting halls don't cause parties. Statue gardens give nice happy thoughts if they have nice statues and other items on display.
4. You can. It immediately caves in. Don't do it.

I know....but reading the discussion gave me the whole idea, I am pretty sure that dark age castles had similar "kill holes"

They did, but those were defensive - if fort'ns do work vertically, that's what you're looking for.

The test is fairly straigtforward:

1) Build a floor with one fortification in the middle, overlooking an enclosed area below.
2) Station archers around it, set "harrass wild animals"
3) Capture a wild animal in a cage trap.
4) Arrange for the animal to be released into that area (by dumping or a mechanism to spring the cage.)

See if they turn it into a pincushion, or they don't even notice.

And let us know hiow it works

Actually, no, you can't - if you try, you'll get "Building present" and won't be able to place it. The only time you get cave-ins with bridges is when you try to build a construction (i.e. wall, floor, ramp, fortification, stairs) and place it next to the bridge.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
