Opiums just like most drugs. It's addictive and too much kills you.

Too much of almost anything will kill you, it's just easier to get too much Opium than it is to get too much, say Oxygen.

actually our atmosphere has insanely low amounts of oxygen and if you turn the mix up to say, 25% oxygen, it would most likely kill all life on earth that relies on the current atmosphere, aka everything but fish and microbials.

Yeah...masochism is enjoyment of pain, not a deathwish.

Alright, LegoLord, you've goaded me into addressing the "you are a wuss and you have bad teeth" thing directly. My complaint against dentists isn't the discomfort. It's that they are shysters. I will show my work for extra credit:
Nobody likes dentistry, they are in it for the money.
People don't know shit about their own mouths. If the dentist says you have a problem, you take their word for it.
It is in their interest to perform as much work on teeth as possible, because more work = more money, whether or not the work is required.
Therefore, all dentists have both the means and the motivation to be con artists.
Um.  Just so we're clear; you're being as silly as I was being, right?

Although since you mention it, my freinds always said my 90o off tooth (among other teeth) looked funny before I actually heard I needed braces from my dentist.  But those are off now and I have straight teeth.  Yay!

Yes. I think.

That wasn't a rant directed at you, LegoLord, just prompted by you. Really you mostly just described the dental work you've had done and then requoted the wuss thing, so I wasn't entirely sure what you were getting at. I realize my conspiracy theory is crazy. My cynicism is so vast that I am distrustful of my own cynicism :). I just wanted to explain why being a wuss isn't the only reason to hate dentists. And just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

Opium is similar (probably wrong here) to heroin. I hope I don't need to tell you to STAY AWAY from them unless you want to be addicted to them for a long time.

Heroin is a derivate from morphine, which is extracted from opium and in fact responsible for most of its effects.

And BTW: Earth's atmosphere is actually 21% oxygen. I dont know if a global increase of 4% in oxygen would wreck any ecosystem, but I am pretty sure that it would be mostly harmless for humans.

A 4% increase in oxygen would probably make things a bit faster, people and animals operating in oxygen rich environments tend to have more energy and soforth, and i think if you increase the oxygen level then insects start doing fun things like growing to rediculous sizes and breeding at an obscene pace.

You can, of course, overdo it. I believe 100% oxygen is fatal, and of course higher oxygen levels means fires burn faster and hotter, but i don't think a 4% increase to 25% would cause any serious problems, if anything it might be beneficial.

Not exactly fatal (at least not "urgh, poison *dies*" fatal) , as it can and is in fact administrated to people. There are several potential complications from it, though, in particular lung toxicity

But, If the oxygen shoot's up immediately It can cause a condition that during sleep your body no longer gets the response to automatically breath and the carbon-levels in your blood could get so high that it would cause your automatic breathing to stop all together, aka you'd die in your sleep.  But if it went up slowly like over a period of weeks, like astronauts and deep-sea divers, use or people who rely on oxygen from a tank then your body will acclimatize.  Some times people can even be used to it within a day, but anyone who was asleep at the time would have a risk of dieing in their sleep.  I'm pretty sure that's what can happen to young children, they breathe in a bubble of excess carbon that built up in the corner of their mouth and their bodies response causes their lungs to stop.  Also if you turn the oxygen up to around 50%, a small spark can cause a humongous explosion, so it's not necessarily that the excess oxygen would kill us, but the first lightning storm might.

Ok, so I checked this against a reliable source:
- At 18% or less, many/most terrestrial animals will have a hard tome surviving.
- At 25% (or more), the entire atmosphere will spontaneously (and most likely explosively), combust.
- current level is 21%, this is probably also the optimum for life, either because of the Gaia hypothesis, or more likely simply because that's what everything has evolved for. Or both, mind you.

At something like 23%, you might run into things like dragonflies the size of hawks.  That would be fun.

How?  What would it combust with?  I mean, at the moment the only naturally occuring thing it will combust with is wood, even with extra heat.  Everything else is either too wet, too deep, or is eaten too quickly.

It does not combust by itself, rather, it aids in combustion. It will make every fire around much, much worse.
