Can I save my Underground Pool?
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:14:34 pm »

My "underground" pool wasn't totally underground, and I'm in the middle of a desert. So it dried up. Most of it isn't even muddy anymore.

Is there any way I can get it back short of diverting my brook?

Should I bother? Like  I said it's desert, there aren't even Cactuses, so the 1/3 of the pool that is currently muddy is the only place on the map trees gropw naturally.

If it was a "real" underground pool (that is, you got a message pop up saying you discovered an underground pool), than any subterranean area on the map that gets muddied can grow trees.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

It is a real underground pool. I didn't get the message, but that's probably because a Magma pool was also visible at embark, and the game does not know how to handle both features being discovered simultaneously.

I have tower cap saplings in my farms, there are dozens more in the remains of the pool, and a couple full-grown ones too.

As he noted, that's the only underground area that grows trees naturally.

You don't get the message if the feature is visible when you embark, though ordinarily this only happens for magma pipes, chasms, and bottomless pits.

Anyway, there's not much point beyond aesthetics for refilling your underground pool. You could divert your brook or use an aquifer if you have one to refill it, but that's basically it. "Murky pool" tiles will accumulate very small amounts of water when it rains, but you're in a desert.

I guess my poor little olmmen will have to be thirsty then. There is a brook, but it's a z-level below the former pool.

The embark screen said there was an aquifer, but I haven't found it yet. And it's probably a at least one z-level below the pool, too.

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

You can make your pool Underground again!

Heres what you need to do:

(1) Use magma to make a 'natural' obsidian ceiling above the pool.

This wont turn on the 'underground' flags again, but if you then...

(2) Rig up a dungeon collapse to drop the bottom of the pool a few levels

then the ceiling from step one will mean that the pool's new location wont be marked as 'aboveground'.

Or at least, I think that should work: I was using map hacking to create my magma and water for testing so I cant be entirely 110% sure...
