I agree with Neonivek -- it's hard to recommend it to anyone.  I enjoy the utter insanity of it though.

Dude, If it we didn't think it was fun, why would we be here? besides, it's free, so you can try it out and if you need space there's always the dump feature in the recycle bin, or whatever mac users have.

The next version's underground updates may or may not change this

It definately makes it much more interesting... but without
1) A reasonable way to make money
2) A reasonable way to get equipment and food
3) A reasonable way to get companions

It just isn't there yet.
Hey if you kill bronze collosus you can get all the money you need by selling
And if you mod any other creature to drop meals on their death that might help too!
Also cant you recruit people in the towns?

Yeah there is a reason why I put "Reasonable" at the end of those

1) Shops don't properly display cost meaning you need to whip out a calculator on the spot to use the shops.
2) Modding doesn't count
3) You can but once again... it isn't reasonable. In fact in some versions it was impossible to get anything but a drunk or Ex-Adventurer.

1)You can still make money by demanding 9000 and letting the shopkeeper adjust it for you.
2)Aww shucks
3)Older versions dont count... and in this version it seems reasonable enough, just ask a guy with less skill then you and your set!

Yep just keep randomly asking people around town until someone agrees to go with you! (or slaves...)

No, no, no, you gotta do quests to get more companion capacity.

Actually I think you just have to get a shit ton of XP and/or kill a bunch of people.

Yep, a legendary can recruit anyone(who is recruitable).

Also its easy to gain exp in sheild, wrestle, and throwing.
Everything else is a pain in the ass...

Actually, I am glad the OP asked this.  Maybe it should have been phrased differently, as in "What do you find fun about this mode?", but the resulting thread was informative.  Well, for me at least, which is more or less the same tone as the replies in this thread.  :)

I think it's currently fun, but not as much as the main mode. I only use it as a break for when I get bored of fortress mode right now. However, when adventurer skills come out, I will spend the next week making a fortress with one person. The possibilities are endless, mostly because I can make something like a bath then use it. It'll be awesome to recreate my house or something and then live in it. Maybe even recruit other people to be my family....

What does Sysice mean? Like implementing building skills in adventure mode?

^^^ Yeah, among other things.  The items below have been elevated to dev_next, which means Toady will be working on them soon after the upcoming release.

# Core84, HUNTING AND GATHERING, (Future): You need to be able to obtain food from the wilderness and perform other tasks related to processing a hunted creature's body, trading with the a town perhaps but able to survive in the wilds. More abstract hunting on the travel view needs to be roughly equivalent to hunting only on the local view. You should be able to find signs of animals to help you out, and you should be able to gather any plants you find.

# Core85, CHOP, DIG, BUILD!, (Future): As an adventurer, chop down trees, dig channels, mine into a cliff face, build whatever structure you have the patience for. Your efforts should be saved as a proper site or at least some similar notion (whatever inns and so on along roads end up using), and the contents should remain relatively undisturbed with proper precautions.

# Core86, ADVANCED ADVENTURER SKILLS, (Future): Virtually every job available in dwarf mode should be available to you as an adventurer, though it might rely on town infrastructure, especially at first.
