Sun Berries
« on: September 14, 2009, 05:53:39 pm »

I've run probably 50 different forts and only managed to acquire the elusive berries once.  Even then, I only found a small bag of them in the debris from a supply caravan that got decimated on the way in.

How do I get those pesky elves to bring me the berries I need for the liquor my dwarves crave?

They bring them every once in a while. Elvish cargo is always random.
If you're not patient, you could mod in an elvish guild representative.

They're in Vanilla, they just often die out in world gen. I'm currently playing a map with flux, magma, bottomless pit, underground river, surface brook, more obsidian than I can handle, and even some sand to boot. And the elves have a guild rep.

Now pardon me, I have some Giant Jaguars and Leopards to breed/train into an unstoppable army.  :D

There is an engraving of three dwarves in a dining room. The third dwarf is a soaper.

The only reason I don't murder every elf that steps onto the map.

It is kind of hard to hate people who bring you giant eagles and the like

As long as they're tame, that is.

You have elves that bring you cool things, I have ones that bring me a never-ending stream of cloth I don't need or want---although it is one way to get some bins early on if you're short on wood---or muck roots and bloated tubers.

Note that Elves only bring sun berries if they've settled in an appropriately Good area - the single Elven civilization in my current game (a 17x17 pocket world) apparently settled in a neutral forest, so they've never brought sun berries or their seeds to trade.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

And all that wonderful elfbone and elfleather. Nothing like having your troops equipped in the remains of your enemies.

Yeah, sunberries only grow in 'good' aligned areas, if you have unicorns and pixies there's a good chance you can forage sun berries.

Similarly, silver barb only grows in evil areas, seems a lot weaker though when sunberries make sunshine and barb makes gutter cruor.

Just so I had the option of working with them (cause I never seem to end up in the right area), I modded in a smelter reaction to give me 5 of each of the "elusive" plants, like sunberry and valley herb... and of course, sliver barb.

Cause you gotta have black clothes.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

You could just change the entry in the matgloss_plant.txt and make sunberries (and silver barbs) grow anywhere by getting rid of the [GOOD] (or [EVIL]) tag.

Elves just came in. They had the seeds. So I bought them. However, they don't seem to appear on outdoor farm list... I can plant other stuff like rope reed though (all picked). Anyone know why?
