I'm confused how one "digs horizontally into the pipe".  That's a good trick. :-\

Presumably significant portions of the pipe are drained first.

"Significant". Yeah, like "Magma causes significant damage to careless miners" level of significant.  ;)

Find a z-level of the pipe that is narrow, above a z-level of the pipe that is wide, so that there are rock areas on the top z-level that are directly above magma on the bottom z-level.

Depending on your needs, you can then mine up to (but not breaking into) the pipe on the bottom level, and then channel the last tiles from the top level safely.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

sorry not to derail the topic, but a question I have regarding screwpumps.

lets say I have a resevoir, and I have a pump directly feeding into it so that the top of the pump is at the top of the resevoir. If I keep the pump pumping, will it A) reach the top of the resevoir, and B) keep on going after that assumign there is empty space above it?

Water from pumps will fill up to, but not exceeding, the level that the pump is on.  So if your pump is physically *above* the walls that make up the top of the reservoir, it will overspill.  If your pump is *on the same level* as the walls that make up the top of the reservoir, it will not overflow.

That, this will overflow:
Code: [Select]
pP
~XX  XX
~XX  XX
~XX  XX

This will not:

Code: [Select]
pP  XX
~XX  XX
~XX  XX
~XX  XX
