Who best exemplifies your idea of a hero, and why?

How about my granddad?
I don't much about him, as he died before I was born, but so many people came to the funeral that there were people queuing up outside the church. Apparently he did a lot of work during the Occupation, and helped a lot of people. I hope I can find out more about him, and live up to that example.

Heros can get spelled both ways. Although the Heroes version is more common.

Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer. I think most people would agree he was something of a hero. (More of a martyr, but there was some heroism going on too, I think)

A hero is just a man who knows he's free.

In my mind the title of hero isn't limited only to people who've saved lives or courageously resisted oppression. Although those people certainly are heroes, I also include anyone who's been dealt an awful hand, a grave challenge, had the entire world against them... and went through it, grinning and laughing, or screaming and crying; anyone who made it through and held themselves together through the onslaught (or gave their all, never looking back, fighting 'til the end) is an uplifting inspiration to those still in the storm, and in my mind, that makes them a hero.

And that's not just flattery, a hero is someone who is dedicated to what he/she/it believes, and who commit acts beyond what should be possible in order to serve that ideal and make their vision come real, overcoming seemingly insurmountable difficulties, and sway the fates of many. A hero shuld also be selfless and in general "good". There is also contributing elements from courage, and an accomplishment that happened only out of dumb luck counts for much less than one due to creative problem solving, hard work, or personal sacrifice and risk taking.
