Are there any hard and fast rules on activating economy?
« on: September 13, 2009, 02:57:51 pm »

I just can't seem to get it to activate for the life of me. It's enabled in the .ini, and I've met all the wikipedia requirements.

I have 130 Dwarves, the dungeon master, the philospher; I have 900,000 created wealth; I have done 50 of each job (except gem cutting which I did 25 of, then saved the rest of raw for moods), and have so much junk laying around that I'm just creating then immediately dumping stuff.  My caravan has survived and the liason walked safely off the map (through a mountain of goblin corpses might I add, thank god I installed that draw bridge before the siege...)

But still no economy!  No baron, no taxkeeper, nothing.  Is there something I'm missing?  I have never gotten the economy to activate, but in most games I don't bother with gem cutting and never tried to actually activate it.  I'm actively trying to activate it now and still can't get it.

Why the hell would you want to activate the economy?

It's something you put off for as long as possible, not try to bring forward.
Anyway, 900,000 isn't enough.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

Because I've never had it before.  Have gotten several 200 forts but never had the economy activate.

How much is needed if 900,000 isn't enough?

Do you have 10,000 imported wealth?

Likely not.  My fort is pretty self sufficient and I don't trade much.

Guess I'm gonna have to hit up the next caravan for...more worthless stuff.

Actually I was wrong.  I just loaded up my game and it's Exported Wealth that I don't have 10k of (though I am 52 short of it...lol).  I have 400,000 Imported Wealth.

Most of that $400,000 probably comes from immigrants or goblins. I imagine it only counts towards a baron if you get it from the dwarves, which I doubt you did if you only have 10k exported wealth.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Some stuff is not worthless.  Food is food, and booze is better than food. Blocks of obscure metal ores are handy for building, pumps, wells, etc., since they're almost giving them away.

If you've got that much laying around, you need to tone down production and start an engineering project.  ;)

The economy adds to the later game challenge by providing a shift in focus. Yes, early on, it is (relatively) important to crank out trade goods. Once you've nailed a few goblin sieges and can trade off their gear, and once you have a coupla legendaries handling all your food/booze/crafting needs, then moving towards hitting the mega-projects can be challenging and fun (the best kind of fun!). And the economy, with all its inherent weirdness and 'lack of job' reports just adds some flavour to that. woot.

Quick tips post economy:
1. NEVER MAKE COINS because they haul them like they haul everything else.
2. Build luxury public housing. (barracks)
3. Pre economy better housing is better, post economy worse is better. Start your fort with that in mind. Since the first furniture you make will be the worst put that in 2x2 unsmoothed rooms, then make a whack of 2x2 smoothed rooms with better furniture, then maybe some 2x2 engraved rooms with the best furniture. Remember Champions don't pay rent so feel free to give them posh rooms. If you're lucky they'll have a non-Champion spouse... Rooms much bigger than 2x2 or 2x3, particularly if they're engraved, will lead to mass homelessness.
