The Unofficial CWAL Game Weakwhips (open signups)
« on: September 13, 2009, 02:35:56 pm »

This is the unofficial CWAL game.  I decided to keep things unofficial until the next major release.  As those involved may have noticed, the first 2 CWAL games were not a success.  I am hoping to change that by consolidating everything here in this new game.  It is also my hope that this game will live up to the reputation of the CWAL community.

http://cwal.net/

Instructions.

Anyone may join this game at any time.  Your name will be added to the end of the current rotation.  When everyone in the  current rotation plays a turn, we start over with the first player in the rotation.  There is a 1 week deadline for you to complete your turn.  If you fail to meet this deadline, your turn will be skipped.

Rotation

1.diefortheswarm
2.AlienChickenPie (confirmation)
3.Grendus (confirmation)

In The Likely Event Of The Loss Of The Fort

If the fort is totally lost during anyone's turn, the following procedure will be used.  I will send a reclaiming party to the fort.  I will try to reclaim the fort and play out a 1 year turn.  If I am successful, the game will continue with the next person in rotation after the person that lost the fort.

Naming You Dwarves

When you begin your turn you are expected to name one of the Dwarves in the fort after yourself.  This Dwarf will be you in any story you write during your turn.  Each successive player will name another Dwarf after themselves.  If your Dwarf dies before your next turn, be creative when writing yourself back into the story.  You may also name other Dwarves after anyone you wish.  Just try not to go overboard with it.

Version

This game will be played on 40.d16.  I have a prepackaged game with the mod files and Dwarf Therapist ready for download.  The link is at the bottom of this post.  If you are unable to run 40.d16, you can try using an  earlier 40.d version.

Modding

Dwarf Personalities have been altered to make undesirable traits more common.

Goblins have the following tags added.  Their actual strength in combat has not been changed.

[CAN_CIV][CAN_LEARN][liKES_FIGHTING]
They will be a lot more hostile in choosing when to siege.
[trAPAVOID]
They are immune to normal traps.
[NOFEAR]
They feel no fear.
[BUILDINGDESTROYER:2]
They will destroy any building, door, floodgate, or workshop they can reach.
[AMPHIBIOUS]
They can breath in or out of water.
[NOBREATHE]
They do not need to breath.
[liTTERSIZE:7:9]
There will be a much larger population of Goblins in the world insuring that they are never depleted.

Goblins will come equipped with all steel equipment.

The [BABYSNATCHER] tag has been removed.

Goblins will start sieging much earlier.

Goblin personalities have been enhanced.

Elf personalities have been enhanced.

Elves will send guards along with their caravans.

Humans bring steel, stone, and gems to trade.

Deblocking reactions are being used.

The economic stone mod is being used.

Rules

There is a 1 week deadline for you to complete your turn.  If you fail to meet this deadline, your turn will be skipped.

No cooking booze!

No cooking seeds!

The fort may not be sealed off from the surface in such a way that the Goblins are unable to enter the fort.

No atom smashers.

You may not use reveal or any other type of 3rd party utility.  The only exception to this is Dwarf Manager and the newer Dwarf Therapist.

You are expected to use either Dwarf Manager or the newer Dwarf Therapist.

The following init options MUST be used.

[TEMPERATURE:YES]
[WEATHER:YES]
[ECONOMY:YES]
[INVADERS:YES]
[CAVEINS:YES]
[ARTIFACTS:YES]

King's Court

Urist Mc Messenger:  Here is the new UltraFinder surveying report sire.

King:  This can't be real,  you are pulling my leg.

King:  I will teach you to lie to your king!

King:  Summon the Hammer Dwarf.

King:  And bring me the actual surveyor.

Several Hours Later

Urist Mc Surveyor:  You summoned me sire.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  There is blood everywhere.  What happened in here?

King:  The messenger thought it would be funny to show me a fake surveying report.

King:  I trust you have more sense then that.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  Yes sire.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  Here is the real report.

King *enraged*:  I will have you head!

Urist Mc Surveyor *quivering in fear*:  I though the same thing at first sire, but this site is real.

King:  If this is for real, this site contains more wealth then our entire civilization 10 times over!

King:  But I still have my doubts.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  I surveyed this site myself sire.  I would wager my life on the validity of the report.

King:  If you are so confident in this site, why don't you lead the expeditionary team yourself.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  I ....

King:  GREAT!  You will embark at once.

Urist Mc Surveyor:  …....

Gathering Supplies

Having never headed an expeditionary team, I have decided to play it safe and arm ourselves as well as possible.  2 Shields should allow me to have 2 legendary wrestlers by the time the fall caravan arrives.  I can then (hopefully) purchase weapons for them.  The rest of them money will go into food and alcohol.  I hope we can bring enough to last us until we get a farm going.  Here is the inventory of our supplies.

1st of Granite.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have arrived at our tomb new home.  Weakwhips has been born.   Right next to our wagon seems to be the underground pool.  I have NEVER seen one breach the surface before.  I have no choice but to wall off the whole wagon area.

12th of Granite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have finished walling off the wagon area.  I hope this is enough protection.

13th of Granite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have a Skeletal Giant Eagle!  I swooped right into the wagon area then took off again.  Luckily almost nobody saw it.  We are going to need to build a roof over the wagon area.  I am going to keep the presence of the Skeletal Giant Eagle secret.  At least until the roof is done.

14th of Slate

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The roof over the wagon area is complete.  I decided to draft our 2 wrestlers rather then have them help with the construction.  The miners picked up the slack and then some. The giant eagle decided to not bother us once thew whole time.  Good thing too, I don't think our need recruit wrestlers could have taken him.

24th of Slate

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I put an armor stand in the wagon so the wrestlers can spar.  It is now serving as both a barracks and a meeting area.

22nd of Felsite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The long corridor leading into our fort is finished.  I used the river to control what directions the caravans enter the site from.  The pillars on the sides of the river make sure there is only 1 direction wagons can enter from.

23rd of Felsite

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is time to build some bedrooms.  I have designated a large block of 160 bedrooms.  This will meet any future needs the fort could have.  I decided to place the thing on the bottom level of the fort.  This way nobody will every be disturbed from their sleep by noise.  Future mayors will thank me.

19th of Galena

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Both our wrestlers have reached legendary!

16th of Limestone

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Dwarven caravan has arrived.  The entrance corridor works fine.  We traded mechanisms for food, booze, some copper swords, and some other assorted stuff.

I met with the Dwarf Trade Liaison and ordered a bunch of stuff for next year.

Leather
Booze
Fish (for bones)
Iron
Iron ores
Bauxite
Shields
Axes
Crossbows
Wood
Iron Anvils
Picks

13th of Sandstone

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The apartment block is done.  The thing looks great!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have decided to build a large farm plot / towercap farm next to the trade depot.

6th of Timber

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Farming area is mined out.  Now to build a system to flood it.

11th of Timber

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some immigrants have arrived.

12th of Timber

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now to mine out a work area.  I will provide sealable rooms for 72 workshops.

16th of Timber

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I built 5 mason workshops.  Now the immigrants can churn out all the doors and floodgates I need to flood the farm area.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I used the manager to cue up the jobs.

20th of Moonstone

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The farming area is completely sealed off.  Now to build the flooding and drainage systems.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have sighted our first Kobold.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He is not alone.  They sent along Kobold archers.  The military has been dispatched.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The workshop area is finished.  Damn that was fast.

4th of Opal

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The drainage system is mined out.  Now the the fortifications and floodgates need to be put in place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have designated an area under some of the workshops to channel magma.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The miners have begone digging the channel that will allow the surface river to flow into the fort.

4th of Obisidian

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The surface river channel is complete.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The floodgates are still being connected to levers but that can still be done in spite of the water they are now holding back.

20th of Obsidian

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The miners have located the magma pipe.

1st of Granite

I am turning over the fort to the new guy.  Here are some notes which will hopefully prevent it's destruction.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is where I intend pumps to be build.  They will pump the magma out of the pipe.  The magma will then fall 1 z level and fill the channel leading to the workshops.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have designated this area to be mined out in order to serve as storage for the workshops underneath.

Please make sure you totally seal off the magma channel from the staircases BEFORE you start pumping magma.  Also make sure all doors are tightly closed and the whole system is sealed BEFORE you open the floodgates holding back the water.

Confirming, I'll start playing shortly.
You uploaded a lot of pictures. Do you have a particular setup that makes the process less dumb, or do you just tolerate the repitition? I hate the repetitive process of requesting a screenshot, pasting it, choosing a save location, choosing an upload location, uploading, copying the code and putting it in place; I could really use a way to skip most of the steps between the first and the last one.

So long as this fortress is in better shape than the last one, I'll  confirm the turn.

Holy crap, I went back and checked the raws on the last game. You modded in size SEVENTEEN goblins! With TWELVE DAMBLOCK! No wonder we couldn't kill them, they were a race of semi-megabeasts.

Size has a cascading effect in combat. Even the feared orc hordes are only size 9. Small surprise the ambushes wiped out the fort, vanilla players won't see anything that strong til they have a fortress of 80+.

I'm going to bump this a single time, just to see if we can get more signups.

The goblins on this embark are far weaker than orcs even. The only hard part will be surviving the early waves with limited military, which will already be done for you. My last post was about the previous unofficial CWAL game, which was lost when all five meta-traps (one beast trap, 3 drowning traps and a pit) turned out to completely fail at killing them and a single gob could wipe out the entire military. The gobs we'll be against here are fairly weak, should be fun.

Here's the first part of the update.

14th Hematite, 252
Mebzuth Releasedattic, hunter and assigned leader, ran into the fortress, narrowly dodging the falling debris from the digging work going on upstairs.
"FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!"
"The hell is wrong with you, Mebzuth?!" one of the miners shouted back.
"Goblins! We're not ready or anything! Traders, we've got goblins comin' in! Get ready!"
A wrestler, one of the ten fresh recruits, nearly collided with Mebzuth, who dodged him and grabbed him by the collar, still running. "We've got goblins, soldier! You are all on duty!"
"...Yes, sir..." the soldier said, disengaged from Mebzuth's grip and ran to the wagon house to pass the message.
Having alerted the troops, Mebzuth turned in a wide arc and ran right out of the fortress to observe the enemy forces. They were about sixteen goblins, about half of them armed with melee weapons. The fortress militia turned out to be outnumbered and outgunned.
The liaison caught up with Mezbuth, panting and covered in sweat that disgustingly dripped from his clean shaven chin instead of gathering in the beard. "Your reaction..." the liaison took short breath "suggests that this..." another breath "fortress is inadequately defended. Our guild..."
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i35.tinypic.com/10fz1ag.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">[/url]
Mezbuth moved his hand as if to cover the liaison's mouth with the crossbow, nearly hitting him in the process. "check this out!"
A skeletal giant eagle spotted the goblins and moved in to the kill. The goblins stood there for a second, startled, and the eagle pecked one in the leg. A split second later, the entire forced converged on it and blocked Mezbuth's view of the fight. Eventually, a lucky wrestler punched the eagle's skull off, causing the rest of the body to fall apart in a shower of light, hollow bones. The goblins spread out again, revealing a single wrestler's body.
"As I was saying, your fort's defenses appear inadequate. Our guild loves nothing more than a good bargain, but a bargain is not good when we have to lose precious men and equipment to goblin attacks on your property. I will be reporting this."
"You'd have to survive to do that. Let's go back inside." Mezbuth said as he turned towards the fortress entrance. When they reached the entrance corridor, they saw the fort's small militia blocking the corridor, too scared to move. They weren't ready to handle this situation, but they had no choice.
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/24cfdzp.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">[/url]
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.tinypic.com/ncytyw.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">[/url]
When the goblins became visible, Mezbuth yelled "Whip it!" and the wrestlers charged forward, yelling "Weakwhips!"
http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1691-weakwhipsgetssieged-hematite52
Mezbuth couldn't see anything but dwarven backs and couldn't hear anything over the repeated battle cry. When it was over, the dwarves dispersed to reveal eight bloody lumps of goblin flesh.
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.tinypic.com/hvz8dd.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">[/url]
A single dwarf, covered in blood, wiped his face. "All in a day's work!" he said, before being picked up by the cheering soldiers. He died in their hands. The dwarves kept celebrating for quite a while before noticing that. Meanwhile, the traders settled the bets they made over the outcome of the battle and the guards, who never had to leave their posts, admired the carnage. The liaison, shamed by the ordeal, tried and failed to avoid Mezbuth. "Say, Liaison, how's your report coming along?"

Nothing much. Besides the immigrant wave that mostly got drafted, I dug out some new facilities, including a place where marksdwarves can fire on the entrance corridor. I'll cover most of that in the second part.

14th Malachite, 252
Mebzuth was busy ordering some haulers around when one of the miners ran to him. "We screwed up, Boss! Adil got crushed under the rocks we knocked out for the balcony?" "The hell is Adil?" "One of our farmers, Boss." "He never cooked anything anyway. Go find one of the two peasants who aren't posessed and tell him he's the new farmer. Find the other one and tell him to inventory the whole fortress."
Having accomplished that, Mebzuth went to the new barracks, a debris-filled hole with a solitary weapon rack inside, and addressed the new recruits, ten of the most useless immigrants. "Welcome to Weakwhips. As you may or may not know, we're surrounded by skeletal creatures. That's no big deal. We're also right in the middle of goblin country." Mebzuth paused and led the recruits out fo the barracks and into the entrance corridor, still littered with goblin bodies. The haulers deemed them dry and decomposed enough for bone harvest, so they were hard at work picking out the bones and ferrying them to the stockpile. "We beat this last wave using nothing more than our fists, but this is just the beginning. You will be our extra line of defence. As we speak, the bones of these goblins and other beasts are being turned into crossbows and bolts, which you will use to become wheakwh..." Mebzuth was interrupted by a racket coming from the workshop area. He signalled to one of the wrestler squad commanders and took him downstairs. They saw the empty craftsdwarf's workshop and realized that the posessed peasant had snapped. The wrestlers spotted the berserker and went to beat him down. Mebzuth left them to conduct their business and ordered up a coffin.

24th Galena, 252
"What do you mean a whole wagon?" asked Mebzuth, dumbfounded.
"Human sized gear, cloth bins, all that stuff. I even found a rotten human body in one corner." said Diefortheswarm, the mechanic who found the mechanism that stood on top of the buried pile.
"What the hell happened to the caravan?"
"I... I don't know, Boss. Maybe they got killed in that mining accident. What should we do with all that stuff?"
"I don't know.. Claim it for now. We'll melt the oversized gear when we get the magma works running."
Diefortheswarm walked away, muttering about incompetent leadership.

14th Limestone, 252
Tekkud Arotherush, Hamlet Liaison, descended the entrance ramp. He saw the fortifications above the last stretch of the entryway and noted that down. There were still goblin bones here and there, and the one stoo small to be useful cracked under his boots. To his right, he could hear the sounds of fists hitting leather and wood as the wrestlers trained. He soon found Mebzuth, who had no patience for the formalities. "Gimme wood, meat, leath.." "What meat?" "Anyhing, I don't give a damn. Same goes for leather. Bring any booze you can find, bars of metal that's not useless, iron anvils, animals, that kind of things. You're a big boy, you'll figure it out."

11th Sandstone, 252
The miners met Mebzuth at the magma tap where the magma pipe was slated to connect to the magma forge pipeline. "Why didn't you tap the pipe?" he asked them.
"We weren't supposed to. Diefortheswarm was going to install a pump."
"Yeah, that's not going to happen. Knock out these two sections here, and the magma will flow through the fortifications you made right into the pipeline."
The miners obliged, and the magma started flowing, slowly as ever.
"Boss, did you remember to build walls to seal the parts of the shafts that intersect the pipeline?"
"No. Shit. SHIT! Find the goddamn masons and tell them to do it quickly. Shit!"
Diefortheswarm ran down to the pipeline and sealed it with plenty of time to spare, and then ran back to Mebzuth. "What the hell was that, Mebzuth?"
"Sorry I assumed you were competent enough to seal the pipeline back when you were in charge. Never mind that, it's okay now."
"But without pumps, the imps will be able to squeeze through the fortifications!"
"That's ridiculous, a stupid ghost story made up by magma engineers. If it makes you feel better, I won't tap into the pipeline from above until we make sure we don't hear any imps down there."

7th Obsidian, 252
"Skeletal goats! Skeletal goats!" voices echoed throughout the fortress. The militia quickly readied itself and got in position. The wrestlers quickly disassembled the four goats. The overwhelming feeling was disappointment, as they were really hungry and hoped for living goats that could be butchered. They went to Mebzuth to complain of their hunger. He promptly ordered all the caged animals slaughtered for meat, and then went to meet the bookkeeper. "How bad is it?" "We seem to be out of meat, and we have five edible plants remaining.  We're screwed." "I did order the animals slaughtered, that should keep us going for a while." "Our small supply of animals will only delay the inevitable. You should start looking for alternative food sources."

31st Obsidian, 252
Udil the miner, who's been laboring in the mason's workshop for days, finally came out. Mebzuth cleared his ferewell tour schedule to congratulate him, and then went right back to the task of reviewing his work. He visited the tower cap farm, where the farmers were hard at work plucking out bushes. "How are we doing?" "Every little bit helps, but the farm is too small to sustain us on foraging alone." "What can we do about it?" "We could use a bigger farm and more fields." Mebzuth thanked them and left for the workshops.
At the workshops, Mebzuth consulted the unemployed smiths. They reported that the magma was well on its way to filling the pipeline, and that they can't wait to get the industry running. A miner who was present showed Mebzuth a spot of limonite at the corner of one of the shafts leading to the magma pipe. "We could probably arm the entire militia with this limonite alone, Boss!" "Have you found any coal or lignite yet?" "Nope, sorry." "That's a shame. I guess we'll have to stock up on wood to get a steel industry going. Now, I'd love to chat, but I've still got to visit the miltia."
The militia gave Mebzuth a hero's welcome. Eleven wrestlers and ten recruits training on the crossbow. "How's the crossbow training going?" "It's tough, Boss. We just can't get enough bone bolts, and it's not like we're lacking in bone." "That's odd, I always make sure to order more." "They're just lazy, Boss, I know it!" "Are you sure? Maybe they're too busy with other things. Besides, all of you have full quivers, you could afford to hit the targets more."
With his farewell tour taken care of, Mebzuth passed his duties to Grendus and went vermin-hunting.

That's the end of year 252. Here's the save file:
