Pump Question

===*==

= walls
<< and >> pumps, with direction
# hatch
W water
* gear

Would this set up move the water from where it is up to the hatch automatically (when gear is powering the pumps)?

And does pumps block water from flowing through it?

I'm thinking of using 3 of these to set up a conveyor belt. Dwarf walks over pressure plates to put on stockpile, walks back to trigger a floodgate to lock in the stockpile and start flushing.

123FS----

Pressure plates
1 (with water) engages 2's gear (water in 2 gets pumped out always, so system is off) and disengages 3's gear
2 (with water) turns on flushing system
3 (with water) engages 1's gear (water in 1 gets pumped out, 1 has no water, 2 is turned on)
F floodgate
S Stockpile
--- Flush area

Though the pressure plates may be too close... How far apart should they be, so that the water can be pumped out sufficiently?

I'm not entirely certain of this, but I dont think that pump setup will work.

Now assuming that the water source for W is infinate, it would probably end up with this.

as for water blockage

the end of the pump that the water comes out of serves as a wall for the purposes of plumbing.

Nah, it's just 1 block of water. I'm kinda hoping the system can be self-contained (no water in, and doesn't evaporate. I hope)

The lower pump won't do anything, since its input tile is filled with solid rock. If you channel out the floor, then it'll work, though you'll have to move your gear 1 tile to the left (which you'd want to do anyways, since you want it underneath the impassable tile).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Oh, ok. Thanks.

Just to be sure, the pump will suck up all the water right? Not leaving 1/7's to evaporate? I don't want the system drying up...

That is correct.

Pumps pick up blocks of water greater than 1/7,
and create 7/7 blocks of water. So it won't dry up.

Not exactly - a pump will pick up blocks of water greater than 1/7 and create blocks of water of the exact same size it picked up. Also, if a pump doesn't have room to output all of its input water (e.g. it's pumping into a closed tank), it will only move as much water as it can, leaving the rest in the input tile.

So, it'll dry up? Damn, need to rig a channel then.

Oh, see, I thought pumps always created 7/7 blocks.

Bummer.

This will never happen unless something VERY wrong occurs, like flooding from above.  It should look like...

W<<
      W

Pumps pick up water from next to and below the intake, and dump it out the other end.

The wiki has a good article on pump stacks, under "pump".
