Bugs DF would be worse off without?
« on: September 12, 2009, 10:54:18 pm »

It seems to me a lot of DF's appeal comes from its eccentricities. Outright bugs give us marvels like Planepacked, whereas quirks and incomplete code have rather contributed to the image of the insane, drunken balls of vomit, rags, and beard that we know and love, and given us things like ninja elephants and infernal carp. I'm a little short on examples though, and also just generally curious. Are there any bugs or sub-optimal code that you feel are central to the overall feel of Dwarf Fortress? Do you feel like the removal of some arguable past misfires, like the aforementioned ninja elephants, has been detrimental?

For my own two cents I feel little attachment to most of DF's current oddities. They're engaging and entertaining, but somehow I don't quite think a mob of maniacs is what DF's dwarves are meant to be. At the same time, however, I can't help but feel a little oddly forlorn thinking of some hypothetical future point when our dorfs might actually come across as sane or even, heaven forbid, intelligent.

I believe that elephants and carp need to retain some measure of their deadliness.

That said, I have no fondness for atom-smashers and look forward to the day that metric fucktons of stone can be handled without chasms.

The deadly wildlife is a DF classic. I laugh when my hunters are savaged by camels, unicorns, big cats, giant eagles, and wolves.

Dwarven Cantilevers also need to stay. Holding a mountain up on a pillar of soap is hillarious.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Big cats are weaker in DF than RL.  A starting Wrestler can easily strangle a cougar to death in Adventure mode.

People may hate perpetual motion, but I see no problem with it. I enjoy setting up generator rooms - they are dwarves, they defy physics!

There are bugs that DF is better off without?

I want face-mouth groundhogs with needle teeth that hunt people in packs :(

They seemed more like a slime to me. Or "The Thing" from the movie by the same name.

But yeah, statistically they were like land-bound carps.

Perpetual motion is, in fact, the only practical way to power a pump tower to the sky (pumping your choice of liquid).

My current tower actually has a line of waterwheels that spin (providing power) and have no water pump supplying flow.

The ability to train attributes via throwing/swimming/ambushing as an adventurer.  Throwing can be a real life-saver, too.  Although I suppose that is more about exploits than bugs, but at this point they seem to be about the same thing.

If it wasn't for the pet pathing bug, animal logic wouldn't exist, and I wouldn't be using my free time designing a calculator powered by the desire of pets to be with their masters.

If flowing 7/7 water push stuff and provide power correctly then I actually want perpetual motion out.
I have yet to try the automatic caravan animal toaster. That one better stay for a while.

At the beginning of John Carpenter's The Thing, McCready (shortly after throwing a glass of what I believe was alcohol down a chess computer's MoBo) goes outside to find some ... what was it... Swedish or something... guys in a helicopter grenading a wolfish breed of dog. The doctor I think puts a bullet through one's eye and the other blows himself up with a grenade. Turns out the dog was "The Thing" and proceeded to infect mostly everybody.

This gentleman was comparing a groundhog to "The Thing" so I just tried to make something witty.
