EDIT! In other news, Battleships Forever. Sadly, I'm pretty sure I suck at shipbuilding, and I definitely suck at balancing. :P

Although, playing the actual campaign would not be a terrible idea, IMO.

The campaign can give you a slight idea of how to control ships, but it isn't complete and does nothing for giving pointers about ship design for the most part.
 By all means don't let that stop you, but know when to stop, it will just crash after you reach a certain mission.
