Finally feeling like I have enough of a grasp of DF to get a ~50 dwarf fortress to survive indefinitely (barring something horrible Fun happening like HFS or a disproportionately large goblin siege: traps are for wusses), so I decided to set up a twitter account to be able to tweet about my progress on a new fortress.

Please follow me at @DF_Newbie and comment along as I try to challenge myself (considering a treeless map or an oceanic island, whichever seems less doable more Fun) and not horribly slaughter all my dwarves!

I'm @Dasleah. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm the 'biggest' Twitter user on the whole forums.

Oh, and yes, bracing for the incoming wave of hate about Twitter.

By posting interesting pictures and information you can create a 'social resume' where if someone cares enough then they can learn more about you.

The actual communication side of Facebook is highly overrated.

Thank you for the well-wishes.  I'll also be chronicling my adventures through my userpage on the wiki, though due to the nature of Twitter, the userpage will be updated less often (but be more comprehensive).

Plus, it's not all just pointlessly venting your opinion into the wild. You follow people, people follow you. Sure, most of it's just status updates - and most nowhere near as vapid and pointless as that animation makes out - but it's social media that's 100% communication and conversation. Hell, I've had great conversations with people I'd never otherwise have a chance to meet and would normally be buried under the waves of stupid Facebook / MySpace friend requests, polls, games, etcetera. I don't know about you, but any medium that allows me to have a spontaneous conversation with Ben Templesmith and get on-set updates from my favourite TV shows is awesome.

Plus now that most major news services / websites use Twitter, I don't have to wait for a few hours after they update for my RSS feeds to update - it's news and updates pretty much instantly to my desktop.
