If you can't see your civ, then your dwarfs may be the last survivors of it (Its been known to happen, I recall one thread which was about the last 7 dwarfs in the world trying to rebuild the Dwarven race). Good luck. (This is only one possibility, however, I may be wrong)

It isn't unheard of for dwarves to be wiped out in the worldgen. Usually they were totally annihilated in a war with one of the other races.

You DID wait long enough to give them the chance to come, right?  The dwarven caravan comes in autumn.

I'm pretty sure that if every Dwarven civilization is wiped out, worldgen will abort and generate a new world.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'm in the same situation. Elves, kobolds, goblins and humans on the civ list (elves and humans have traded, kobolds tried to steal, nothing from goblins so far), no dwarves. In the second year's Autumn, with no sign of the dwarf traders nor immigrants - though it's my understanding that you need the traders to return after seeing your created wealth to get immigrants in the first place. Could this be the last of the dwarves? And if it is, how should I encourage my dwarves to redwarf the world?

I've seen a world where there were no dwarves. The elves wiped them out (how we'll never know), as well as the goblins. Literally the only remaining dwarves in the world were the 7 starting a fortress. There were no dwarf caravans, no dwarf immigrants, just elves. *shiver*

It's a cool opportunity, to grow a fortress from seven original dwarves, so I'd keep the save and work on it. If the lack of caravans and other supplies is too much to deal with, you can always keep it around to work on it later.

A fire Imp wiped out all but 1 of my dwarves, who lived for 2 years before he died mysteriously

An entire civ of dwarfs brought down to 7 due to war with elves (we all know it's true).  A chance to revive a dying  people...ruined by a fire imp...freaken anti-climatic if you ask me.

Those last two years of the lone dwarf could have story potential though...

We all know the elves could never have taken down the dwarven might. What obviously happened was too much dwarfiness that backfired and caved in all fortresses at once.

Fortunately (or not), I've still got the same situation. No sign of dwarves other than the starting 7 midway into the third year. I'm probably going to set it aside for a while though. Save available upon request (magma pipe, flux and sand all readily available).
