Smelter problems
« on: September 10, 2009, 05:32:36 pm »

I have just recently started playing Dwarf Fortress And I am having some problems with my smelter.

I have some bituminous coal and A piece of charcoal so I can make coke but the problem is the smelter is not giving me the option.

The only options it is giving me are melt A metal object, smelt cassiterite, and smelt magnetite.

Is the problem the fact I built the smelter out of mudstone? Or is it something else.

How did you obtain the bituminous coal?  Did you mine it out, or did you buy it?  If you bought it, make sure it's not in the form of a block.  Blocks can only be used to construct things.

If you mined it, can your dwarves still find a path between it and the smelter?

Is the bituminous coal or charcoal tasked to be stored in a stockpile? Items can only have one job associated with them at a time, so if the bituminous coal is waiting to go into a stockpile, it won't be available for smelting.

I mined the ore and it is right next to the smelter

Is it possible for 200+ pieces of ore to all be waiting for a 40 sized stockpile? but im not so sure about the charcoal

Anyway, the mudstone has nothing to do with it.

If it was the charcoal, the smelter would complain about needing fuel before allowing you to choose anything.

If they're right next to each other, could you show us a screenshot?  Maybe that would help solve the mystery.  Also, make sure the coal didn't all somehow mysteriously get forbidden (there will be curly braces around an object if it is forbidden).

Ctrl + Print Scr is typically how I do it. Then do a paste function into any graphics program (Microsoft Paint works just fine for this).

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

We can't see an image that's still on your computer.  You have to upload it somewhere on the internet (there are a few free image hosting services available) and link to it there.

Photobucket, ImageShack, etc.  These are free image hosting sites that, thankfully for you, come with instructions on how to post the images.

Hrm.  Are the dark gray *s in the stockpile in that screenshot bituminous coal?  I'll assume so.  In which case...  check to make sure they didn't get forbidden somehow.

Also, where did you download the game (as in, was it from somewhere other than this site), and did you change anything in the raw folder?

We don't care about the mudstone.  The smelter WORKS, it's just not giving you the choice to work with bituminous coal.  So, where is the coal?

I'm not sure but I think it is in the second to the right bin.

Does a bar/block stockpile hold coal?
