Government
« on: September 10, 2009, 05:25:02 pm »

So, uh.... what kind of government do the dwarves live under?  Will it possible to manually set the government later on each with its pro's and con's?  I fully support the idea of the dwarves having freewill, and therefore your will is issued via government.  The idea just seams awesome to me, I am all for Communist dwarves!

The Dwarves live under a monarchy.  Note the King/Queen.

It is clearly a despotic oligarchy. Nobles demanding rooms cast of solid adamantium then ordering the nearest cheese maker beaten three times with a hammer when it isn't met. Choosing a government just sounds far too complicated and people will constantly argue about which should od what.

Dwarves have some wierd form of a monarchy, they have a king/queen, but they also elect their mayors, and have nobles which do not fit into the system that way.

I think it's safe to say dwarves have no real government, it seems like a mixture of several kinds to me.

On paper, the dwarven government is an authoritarianistic monarchy.  It is ruled by a king, but with non-elected officials making decisions.  Although these officials respect certain aspects of individual freedom, their authority is strongly (if not brutally) enforced.

In reality, the dwarven government is merely a whisp in comparison to the divine truth of Armok.  Dwarves are controlled by three rules.  All that stands, falls.  All that is flammable, combusts.  And all that bleeds, will.

It seems that there is a natural progression from a commune (too small to be called communism, really) to a despotic oligarchy, like he said.

I hope the dwarves learn to create governments/keep them going against your will.

Basically you are the government, you order the dwarves to make stuff, they make it, you seize control over it and pay them for their work, then the shops get it for no charge, and some other dwarf buys it with the money they get paid with. Oh, and if the dwarf is legendary or a noble, they get anything, for free. Yeah, it's messed up.

Part of what I meant, maybe this belongs in the suggestions forum, but I think that Dwarves with free will that are manipulated via government would be a cool, if far off goal

England and Spain have a king/queen, and an elected prime minister.

Dwarves start out as true communism, and really start to become more, what, socialist?

Then economy sets in and it's like, China in a few years? Our typical view of communism with a free market economy with occasional mandates, but the government is not elected.

The King/Queen doesn't really do anything so it's not really important.

I think you'll have the option to change some of this in later releases (not this next one).

My point is that your rule (and that of dwarven nobles) is absolute, the dwarves themselves don't have any kind of free will and don't even consider the idea of owning something until some invisible trigger is hit that starts the economy

Dwarves live under a weird government. Like England, they have an official monarch, but he's more of a figurehead than anything. There are nobles who are allowed to mandate things and have some small power in government (such as taxes and law), but like the king they don't actually run things.

Dwarf colonies start under a theocratic utopian government. Everyone does what work is assigned without complaint (or rather, they don't complain about the work, only the conditions) and partakes freely of what they need. The only things dwarves truly "own" are bedrooms and clothing. As this scales up, a small form of government emerges, but mostly it remains true to early utopian societies until the arrival of the baron and implementation of the economy.

The dwarf economy most closely resembles that of a communist state. The government assigns jobs and gives arbitrary pay for completion of any task given. Goods are taken from the state and resold to the population, but all is owned by the state (ok, technically not true, but if you want something a dwarf has, possession is just a magma bath away). However, there is no official ruling body. No dwarf is "more equal" than another, at least officially. All dwarves simply obey a divine will.

So dwarves currently live under a seemingly monarchic but really theocratic communist state. A really frikin complicated government if you ask me.

I dunno about it being a theocracy, since there is no single religion or even any religious leaders or church structure.

Although I'd say that it being a totalitarian communist monarchy is pretty spot-on.
