Golems
« on: June 07, 2007, 02:00:00 am »

Dwarfs should have a workshop called Golemworks where they use ALOT of stones to create a golem that can work or fight for the dwarfs. It should be rather strong but to balance it out you will first need to make a steel powercore(lots of steel) and fill it with lava to power the golem, and after the golem has done a number of tasks the dwarfs must refil the powercore with lava or the golem will just be a big fancy staute.

They wouldn't need power. Golems will be in as soon as magic is in. A golem is made by inscribing a rune upon a statue.

a) I'm not sure Toady has ever said anything about that.

b) This is a really good idea. I know some stuff requires Dwarven muscle power to work currently (pumps), and there was talk of eventually allowing animals to take up the actions, but I think that Golems would be an amazing way to go with this.

I think golems would have to use magic somehow. Right now there's very little in the game that isn't semirealistic, so having golems powered by lava and steel is out of place without magical justification.

If magma men are heated from the inside by whatever magic allows them to exist, they should always be covered in a "rock suit" where the magma contacts the air.  Since the rock is rigid, it would crack and melt and re-form as they move.  A bit like Warcraft's Infernals, except that (1) the ominous glow from inside is red like magma, and (2) if they stand still, they look exactly like obsidian statues.  (Surprise!)

This should make them nigh-impossible to kill, since they're made out of rock and self-sealing.  Though immersing them in water should either freeze them or make them explode into a million pieces of razor-sharp obsidian shrapnel.  (Surprise again!)

Golems would be awesome.

One thing we would have to do is keep them VERY expensive. Both in material and effort.

Well the lava will remodulat the confinement field of the steel core and redefine the activation circuitry of the golems body and that will increase the confinement of the problematic steelcore and remodulate the confinement of the rest of the golem, and thats how lava makes the golem move.

There are 2 ways golems could be made, Magic or mechanisms. Magical golems would work on magic, and mechanical golems would work on steam or clockwork. They would all need fixed after a while, magical one by a wizard and mechanical ones by a mechanic.

Magical golems run on magic and need recharged by a wizard every once and a while. They have strength based on how much magic is used and how well made they are.

Steam golems would need a constant supply of water and fuel or magma and water. Strength is based on how much fuel they have right then and how well made they are.

Clockwork golems have low, unalterable strength based on how well made they are, but don't need magic or fuel to run. They will wind down sooner or later and need wound back up by a dwarf.

er, there are already golems in the game.
Iron men, Bronze men, etc.
Collossi are just another version of them.

The rock shell actually wouldn't be that thick.

But still neigh impossible because they are made of magma.

A magma man can be frozen, or just cooled down until it becomes rock, then it dies.
A magical golem can be destroyed in one hit if the animating rune is damaged.
A mechanical golem (you might as well call it an automaton) can have any sort of power supply, but it's only as strong as the materials it's made of, and lasts only as long as its power source. As well, without magic, it can have no intelligence. You'd have to get some kind of soulstones to bring them to life, or just use them as powersuits. A giant mechanical dwarf with a hammer somehow ceases to be an oxymoron..  :)
