Preserving the supply of cave spider silk
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:28:02 am »

If I manage to catch and tame a cave spider without it being eaten first, will that allow it to wander around and make webs without being accosted by cats and hungry dwarves?

I'll probably get eaten by dwarves instead.

If only that would mean web-pooing dwarves...

Slaughter the cats.

If they're pets, have the owner thrown into magma. Or lure him into the noble-toaster with a lever, then set the door to pet-impassable before he leaves. Then order him to pump magma.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I'd suggest you just have your spider silk room locked away deep in the fortress, with at least 5 non-pet passable doors to stop cats.

I'm not sure if it helps to tame the spider and release it, but something in me says it's probably worth a try.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Cats won't bother tame spiders, and dwarves won't try to eat them, but there have been reports that released tamed vermin simply vanish into thin air after a period of time.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Will adopted cave spiders still produce silk?
Any way to make your weaver adopt it if so?

Hmm. If your weaver likes spiders, voila, no issue.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Adopted vermin pets are carried around in the owner's inventory, and cave spiders only produce webs when walking around on the floor.

I can confirm this. I've captured phantom spiders, tamed them, and dumped them deep into the earth. They produced webs just fine. They also disappeared, as you said, but they reappeared a short time later.

I don't know if cave spiders, or other vermin, have life spans, so I don't know how long tamed cave spiders roaming about would stick around.

I understood nothing, contributed nothing, but still got to win, so good game everybody else.

Sounds like standard vermin teleportation behaviour. Did you happen to notice any of them teleporting past doors or the like, as that might be seriously inconvenitent.

Put a door that's tightly shut in the area. On another note, here's a handy way of farming giant cave spider silk.

Except this thread speaks of the vermin cave spiders, not the creature giant cave spiders.  Major difference.

Of course, getting a creature that produces web perhaps isn't a bad idea, modding one to do it if you have to.  It's just not the question of this thread.

A tightly shut door keeps kittens from getting through to hunt the vermin.

Except vermin teleport all over the place. I'm pretty sure vermin don't do a pathfinding check to move.
