Clothes all over the barracks
« on: September 08, 2009, 05:22:58 pm »

when dwarves armour up, they leave their clothes lying around the barracks. Is there a way to put them in chests or cabinets or anything? because i tried putting one of each in the barracks, but that just ended up with the old-code "checkig" thing

This is not restricted to the barracks(although that has the separate issue of sparring wrestlers tearing clothes off). Anytime the dwarves get new gear, they seem to drop their old gear right where they got the new - but they still retain ownership of it.

My latest and most successful fortress embarked right beside the (exposed) magma pipe, so magma and other industries got a head start on the surface. Which made the place a playground for rhesus macaques... after the soldiers got their boots, the monkeys would swarm in and run off with their old shoes. And since they still OWNED the shoes, said shoes wouldn't get tossed into a stockpile.

Unfortunately, those clothes in the barracks will likely never be moved, and they won't wear down either, as only clothes currently being worn will wear down.

You can hide them by going to the mass designations submenu (d - b) and 'h'ide them. It won't make them go away, but you won't have to look at them.

Or you can try removing the barracks, setting all your soldiers armor preferences to clothes, and stand them down, and wait for a while, and maybe they'll get their clothes in order, so long as they have rooms and cabinets and chests to stuff things into. From what I can tell of other people using this, it isn't very successful.

Other solutions involve magma.

True, magma does tend to solve most problems

Indeed. If you don't mind erasing all the flooring, you can remove the barracks and the furniture, stick it elsewhere while everyone moves, and just torch the clothes with magma.
Or just hide and dump-designate them, so that when someone dies they get disposed of.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Does it only work then? I thought dump was famous for ignoring ownership. Like, you can dump merchants' gear and the Hammerer's eponymous weapon(and, in the former case, reclaim them later).

Equipped weapons and armour aren't owned, however. Particularly not ones on merchants or recent migrants.

Idea; build a barracks on a bridge, with a single little cubbyhole for a weapons rack to designate it from. I'm sure you can see where this idea is going.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

make it on a cliff right above your entrance, if you want to dispose of clothes, send them flying, if you want to dispose of a siege, send dwarves flying.

If you tell them to sleep in the barracks and there aren't any beds, I'm pretty sure they'll sleep on the floor. It'd be interesting to see if they'll actually sleep on a bridge...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
