How PRECISELY does this game work? You fight realtime battles in first person (FPS/RPG mix) and your NPC mates just go at it? Do you level them too? Or...?

...oh, and how much like a ninja can you be? Is there a hand to hand skill? Unarmored? Can you wield a pair of knives?

It's an FPS-ish combat system. Think Dynasty Warriors. You run around and smack people with your sword/polearm/axe/whatever.

You can recruit these soldiers that are basically really stupid NPCs that appear alongside you during battle. After each victory, they get some XP. After enough XP, they can be promoted to another unit type (Foot soldier to stronger foot soldier to elite foot soldier).

I believe there is hand to hand (punching), and light armor. I think there's also throwing knives. You'll get pincushioned though, there's no concept of sneaking.

This game quite simply has the best medieval-esque fighting system built in. It is an action/rpg/fps(bows, arrows, firearms in mods). You can swing from different directions, strengths (time prepared swinging/backswinging), and block/parry.

You get "heroes" which follow you into battle and have stats/you can modify their gear the same as yours. Your regular men also gain exp and become stronger over time as they level.

Playing as a "ninja" is hard because as you'd expect, unarmored people DIE. Quickly. In 1x damage uberhard mode you'd knocked out in one clean hit.

Armor helps but I always play uberhard mode, I always suffer from random crossbow/arrow/bullet to the face syndrome :/

I lead my men in all charges of course. I'd expect nothing less from any other commander.

EDIT: I like a good mix of cavalry, infantry, and archers. I tend to plant my archers on a hill, with infantry in front. I take the cavalry and flank the enemy, and as they engage my main force I flank em and steamroll through their ranks. Horse combat has never been so epic.

I love seeing myself after the battle with 5 arrows stuck in my horse and 10 in my shield and one in my helmet.

My favorite. Unfortunately with the Nords the only thing you can do is swarm over them like ants. I play on 112% difficulty.

I imagine. I played in Oblivion with a hand-to-hand, light armor character once. That was hard (which is what I wanted- a tactical change, not just a damage gimp that devolves it into a rhythm game).

What weapons are we using again? I've never played with the spear.

A bastard sword, kite shield, and long bow. Spears are only good for couched lance damage.

Bastard sword, nice. Aren't they two handed though?

Also, long bow, hell yes, I love ranged combat. I don't know what it is, but I just feel awesome when people get pincushioned. I can handle running around with arrows sticking out of your eye if I can just see that.

couched lance damage.

Which is massive.
Unfortunately all you can ever get in is one hit in the initial charge.

A bastard sword can be used in one or two hands right? Yeah, those are the best kinds.

And Rash, how did you get so far so fast? I'm all the way up to level 16 and just barely have 45 troops. Mind, almost half of those are Swadian/Vaegir knights.  ;D

Huskarls are nice to take down castles.

Anyhow, I like to give my companions bows and long onehanded swords with shields.

Enough Vaegir archers can stem off large groups of Nords, but you have to keep them busy yourself whilst avoiding throwing axes to the face. I practice horse archery with em until I'm forced to engage :D

This is what the game is like.

Spoiler: Top is messed up (click to show/hide)
I teach my companions a lesson.

I meet Nizar (who wants to claim him?)

my usual strategy on this game is to recruit / train as many veghier/ swabian knights and steam roller everything, the might of heavy cavalry (not so effective against rodok spears) it kicks nords. light lance for the win.

i recommend you find on of those guys that wants to over throw a king and start the reveloution
