It could be worse, that cat could be alive.

Essentially, the cat killed a vermin. It then attempted to pick it up and bring it to its adopted dwarf. However, since the RAW file does not allow them to use their mouth to carry things, it considered itself too injured and canceled the task. It's a bug that can be fixed by tweaking the cat's RAW file.

Ah, thanks. Thought it was something to do with something it killed(I think I saw one attack a gnome earlier...), but wasn't sure.

"Yay! Mouse!
OH GOD, WHERE ARE MY HANDS?! OH GOD OH GOD WHAT THE HE- Oh. I'm a cat. Right."
The cat then continues on with its business.

the annoying part is that they can carry the vermin to their dwarf anyway and the message is rendered useless garbage.

As with 95% of such questions, this is in the wiki, along with the fix (if you want it).  Has a whole page dedicated to it.  Try "cat" and follow link at bottom.

The 40dx package fixed it, I think by adding the [Grasp] tag to the cat's mouth.

Interesting tangent... if you go and remove hands from dwarves and then load up a live fortress from before the change, people will hold already equipped items in strange locations. I had a miner holding his pick in his lower body.

And I think you may remember this exchange.

That was what inspired me to try it. :)

on a related note on creatures doing storing that probably shouldn't be doing storing:

yesterday i noticed on two separate occasions a marksdwarf (different one each time) performing the 'store item in stockpile' job. this is, as far as i can remember, the first (and second) times i've ever seen that. any theories as to why? i was unaware that military dwarves undertook hauling jobs?

my own thoughts were that:
- the dwarf in question each time might be putting bolts back into a stockpile to exchange them for metal bolts for active duty.

but i didn't test it extensively (or at all), i just observed it and thought, hmm, strange...

I think you're probably seing him/her storing a container of stacked fooditems back on the the food stockpile after having a nibble at some time.  Without checking the wiki.
