Is there a way to restrict passage of a door to all but a few dwarfs?

No.

Only way to filter dwarfs is to <A>ctivate them into the military, station them somewhere, and lock them in.

Darn. Any idea if a system like this will be implemented in future versions?

Yes, something exactly like this next version, Burrows.

Um, I wouldn't say "exactly".

"Burrows", it seems, will encourage dwarves to live and work in one area.  Never got the impression it created "off limits" zones, but not sure.

Currently there's an unofficial preview release that can be downloaded, anyone can see for themselves.

If you designate a burrow, dwarves not assigned to that burrow will not use items/workshops.furnature in there but will still pass through, so that doesn't help his problem. If he wants to restrict it so only people who have business in that area can enter though, he can set a restricted traffic zone: This will prevent dwarves from moving through it if there is another route to their destination, but dwarves will still enter if they need to do so to finish their job.

Ok well, it wasn't crucial that I have restricted zones for certain dwarfs. It was just a idea on a whim kind of thing. Thanks for the answers.

If you mean the OpenGL/SDL versions, those have no gameplay updates, just a better graphical engine.

with the burrows, you could just restrict the entrance's and have a way around, that way only dwarves who need to go in will go in

Hmmm - I thought some players had checked it out personally, and had reported from first hand experience and it was out there, but I can't find that thread right now.  Maybe not, maybe I misread or got the wrong impression, or maybe just a select few were pre-alpha-testing the alpha - either way, it's not there now.  :-\

(I thought I remembered complaints/comments about various bugs - now I'm just not sure.)

I am almost certain that you're simply wrong. I've not heard or seen any indication that tarn was planning to release a 'pre-alpha' build before it's in a semi-playable state.
