Giving the Elves Culture-Appropriate Weapons
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:57:25 am »

As it stands now, Elves simply get wooden versions of stock weapons. Which is fairly weird, since we all know that Elves are, and I quote, "poncy cannibal treehuggers", and to get weapons in that particular mode and shape, they'd have to, well, chop trees.

I'd like your ideas on culturally appropriate weapons for the pointy-eared fellows.

This is the basic Dig Deeper weapon set for elves.

Code: [Select]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_SWORD_SHORT]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_SPEAR]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_TRIDENT]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_BOW]
[AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_ARROWS]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_SWORD_LONG]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_RAPIER]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_PITCHFORK]

Here's one of my proposed weapons:

Code: [Select]
[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_SPIKE_TREE]
[NAME:great thorn:great thorns]
[DAMAGE:80:PIERCE]
[WEIGHT:15]
[SKILL:SWORD]
[CRIT_BOOST:2]
[TWO_HANDED:4]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:4]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]

Giving this weapon exclusively to the elves would make it rely on [WOOD_PREF], right? It'd be weird to see a steel one of these.

All bows would fit.

That would be terrible!

I am seriously considering giving them blowguns instead.

Heh.

Replace maces/hammers with shillelaghs.  Apparently there were long, medium, and short variants.  Thorn arrows might be a good variant.

I hope you are giving kobolds ridiculous weapons, too.

Elves probably get composite wood weapons, seeing as trees don't drop razor-sharp pieces or ready-made weapons all that often.

This would probably limit them to whips (rope), blunt items (say, a bat.), pointy weapons (spear?), and bows.

While doing some research on shillelaghs I found the most awesome (?) picture on wikipedia. Look at the right hand side at the top...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

I can't seem to get my mind out of the gutter after seeing that.

Apparently that one wasn't long enough for the huge number of conquests each side made.

I was actually thinking earlier about the elves and how worthless they are. Their wooden gear is crap, and they're the only ones who can make it. It would make more sense for elvish wooden gear to be better than normal wood (maybe on the level of bronze currently) and allow all races to make wooden gear either for easy armament or training weapons.

It would be more appropriate for elves to wear sentient leather and use leather whips and bone weapons and ammo instead of wood though. Since they value wild animals and trees but consider eating their enemies to be cultured, it would make more sense.

Yeah, is there any way to giv a civ access to weapons made exclusively out of bone? There's no [BONE_PREF] tag...

I was thinking about replacing their wooden weapons with weapons that sound a little more organic, like they were grown from the wood instead of carved.

I tried to get that to work Vester, but I couldn't get them to make things out of bone at all[/]

The sight of people walking around wearing pig tail cloth bonemail was very disheartening.

Gah. Well, there goes that.

I'm thinking of removing all the weapons they have in common with the other races and giving them ones that fulfill a similar function.

For example, for mace skill (which they don't have, actually...) I could give them cudgels like the aforementioned shillelaghs. The sword skill will get stuff with names based on plant parts, like thorn, spike, or leaf (blade). Spears can of course stay, since their spears are probably really nothing but sharpened saplings. They can keep bows, too, although I'm incredibly tempted to make them use blowguns.

Modding elves into ninjas is actually a pretty interesting idea.

It's really too bad they don't use the throwing skill.

I tried adding in Weapon and Block values to some of the wood, in hopes it'd make elves tougher. I haven't noticed if it has, though.
