I once created a topic to see who people trusted with Mod powers. There wasn't much positive reaction to the idea.

Yes, quite frankly I wouldn't trust anyone but Toady and Threetoe. It may just be me, but I think it'll cause problems for Toady should we have fan mods.

Honestly, what can people get unchill about in a forum about DF? This just boggles my mind. I wouldn't mind moderating our curious bunch but since I've never actually seen anything worth moderating here (I meant that in a good way) I'd rather know what kind of problems one must face in here... then there's also my severe procrastination problem which makes me as dubious a candidate as you can get

Also, the occasional troll.

Yeah, this has come up before... personally, there are some folks on the forums I would trust with mod powers, but the official stance (last I heard) is that abuse of power would be too likely to risk it. Also, there's the question of how the mods would be chosen; a vote system would almost definitely be abused in some way, and Toady/ThreeToe simply picking people out could breed resentment/animosity based on their selections.

I still think the people on here are incredibly civil and mature on average, but it's a shame Toady has to deal with our crap when we aren't.

Ah. Well, I've never actually ventured outside the DF part, no wonder I haven't heard of those problems.

In that case, I guess this is somewhat of a serious matter. Toady really shouldn't have to waste his time on such things. I propose either moving the community part to a separate completely separate, non-bay12 forum or actually choosing some mods for that part.

That suggestion has also been discussed, and dismissed, sorry.

Huh, this is extremely weird. I'd choose migrating the forum or appointing mods over having Toady do the work without hesitation.
Do you happen to remember where these matters were discussed?

Well, for one most people don't want to move. The friendly atmosphere here is great.

Relevant thread.

Ah well, but one would hardly feel that move. It's a simple matter of setting up a separate server, copying the whole database and forum software from here, deleting the b12 sections there and deleting the "Finally..." sections here.
I know it's easy to say when I don't frequent Finally, but it just seems like a reasonable solution from any point of view... though if you guys feel otherwise, it's nothing too weird to accept, I guess ;)

I don't know if it is possible to automate certain moderations..
There was a spammer just now for instance.. Prolly a bot, spreading wow heresy.
It made me wonder if it is possible, say, when a certain number of people (with bay watcher status for at least a month or so) report spam, the spam is deleted automatically and the spammer's IP blocked?

It's really easy to get bay watcher status, to be honest. And someone aware of that system could very easily abuse it.

...Are you talking about H4X?
Considering how easy it is to get bay watcher...
How difficult would it be to create enough bots to ban someone, have them get to bay watcher status, leave them 'lurking' for a month or so, and then start banning people left and right?

That's probably what was meant. Then again, I'm busy and might have missed some portion of the post...
Err, anyway, back to your discussion.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

The thing is, if toady makes mods, then he'll have to waste even MORE time devising ways to kill them when they start demanding lay pewter mugs and grand dining rooms.
Can be done with a script on the site.
<?
  foreach($mods as $number => $mod){
    if(isset($mod['demand]){
      unset($mods[$number]);
    }
  }
?>

And voila!
Demand = instakick'd!

This solution doesn't utilize nearly enough magma.

Just get rid of the non-DF related boards. They're basically the only source of moderation headaches from what I can understand, and they're REALLY not needed on a forum like this. There are an infinite number of social forums out there.

I tend to agree. Seems like that is where Toady spends most of his time handing out warnings, banning, and locking/editing threads.

He should just say, "This is why we can't have nice things", lock and/or delete the whole section and move on.
