Forum Moderation Fan Help
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:05:13 am »

In the second DF talk, Toady mentions that he spends so much time moderating the forum and answering emails, that he often doesn't get 'a whole day of programming in' (around 1:23).

Quote
Capntastic:   [14]Dear Toady, what does your day look like?
Toady:   Well they pretty much all look the same, unless it's the end of the month like this, because this is an unusual day. But I get up, after noon, today I got up at three, I usually get up from one to three sometime, then I'll usually turn my computer on and look at all of the horrible things that have happened with moderator reports and so on; see what's going on on the forums and what kind of things people have done, and reply to emails and so on, that can take a lot of time. Oftentimes I don't even get a chance to program anymore; there's a lot to do up until around seven o'clock, because my brother will usually come over around seven o'clock, and then we'll plan stuff out; talk about the month end project, or talk about Dwarf Fortress, or whatever we're working on, and that can last a couple of hours.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to assign a few trusted community members to moderate the forum, so that Toady can concentrate on programming more?

Not to mention that said members would have not to participate in any talk, so as to avoid abuse of power.
But I had the same idea when Toady said that at times it prevented him from coding.

I don't know if it is possible to automate certain moderations..
There was a spammer just now for instance.. Prolly a bot, spreading wow heresy.
It made me wonder if it is possible, say, when a certain number of people (with bay watcher status for at least a month or so) report spam, the spam is deleted automatically and the spammer's IP blocked?

Says who? In, say, BGSF: Most of the more well known moderators talk and stuff, and one even makes mods. The guys there are, in fact, rather forginivng and that forum and this are the most civil forums I've been in.

The thing is, if toady makes mods, then he'll have to waste even MORE time devising ways to kill them when they start demanding lay pewter mugs and grand dining rooms.

So true so true :D
Sigged!

And it could be an idea to have normal people as mods ::)

Can be done with a script on the site.
<?
  foreach($mods as $number => $mod){
    if(isset($mod['demand]){
      unset($mods[$number]);
    }
  }
?>

And voila!
Demand = instakick'd!

It's really easy to get bay watcher status, to be honest. And someone aware of that system could very easily abuse it.

I agree that fan moderation would be rather helpful, but if you regulars can't think of anyone you'd trust with doing it, looks like it won't happen!

The fact that they can't think of anyone they can trust to do it means they are trustworthy of doing it!

I dunno, there are a few folks on here with relatively subdued reputations who might be able to handle the power of a moderator with some success. I know I couldn't, but that's largely because I can't be bothered to spend time policing the forums, as I barely have time to post now and again.
