Personally, I would like to see rhinos. No image required, everyone already knows how badass rhinos are.

So would I but I do think an image is required, this is how I would picture DF rhinos:

I'm working on my first fortress with raising live stock, and I notice some standard animals missing.

Pigs and Chickens. Where they at, yo?

This is pretty awesome, and it's not in.

The wolpertinger, I have no idea what it's from first, but it looks like something that can hurt a dwarf.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Sordid, that last image will haunt my dreams. Positively frightening.
According to Wikipedia, birds don't have teeth.  So Sordid's image is probably a photoshop, substituting the ostrich/emu's inner mouth with that of some toothy mammal.

Note that there are different kinds of teeth in the alleged ostrich mouth - small ones at the center, then fangs, then molar-ish ones at the side.  That's a mammal innovation -- reptiles have all their teeth the same.  If a flightless bird (flying birds omit teeth to save weight) re-evolved teeth, they would likely be reptile-like.

Llamas, obviously.
Although they're easy to mod in myself, so I won't complain.

What I want to see support for in future games is egg-layers.
Nothing like a fresh +lizardman egg omelette+ to start your day off right.

I suspected as much, but it's still a damn unnerving image.

Of course it's a photoshop! Come on. ::)

Heh heh heh, that's pretty much the reaction I had the first time too. ;D But they're not so bad. It's a very cleverly put together picture, actually. In reality these things are relatively small, like 12 centimeters tops including the legs. The guy in the picture is standing a little further off, so they look huge against his leg. Plus if you don't know what they look like, you don't immediately realize that there's two of them in the picture. Well, at least I didn't. All my mind could focus on was this clump of spidery legs as big as a guy's leg, it seriously freaked me out. It's like a goddamn facehugger, only real. But they're harmless. :)

Anyway, moving on, I give you... THE TARSIER!

Aren't they adorable? :-*

We have Tarsiers over here.

Would they count as vermin in DF? They could fit in the palm of my hand. And I have small hands.

And I second Giant Mantis Shrimp.  Those would be damned impressive.

I've really been taken in by the Fossa for awesome creatures that I'd never heard of until about a year ago.  The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossa_(animal)

They're running, jumping, climbing acrobatic muscular balls of mongoosey death.

Quote
The animal is the linchpin of Madagascar's forest ecosystem, he believes, filling the same role that lions, cheetahs, and leopards combined do in Africa.

Quote
When I asked how he would classify a fossa biologically, he laughed. "I guess I'd still call them killing machines," he said, his Alabama roots apparent only in the easy rhythm of his words. "It is equipped to take anything it would encounter in its natural environment." The fossa is as agile as a squirrel, he said, using its long, powerful tail for ballast and balance when leaping from branch to branch. Yet the fossa's muscle and might are closer to those of a clouded leopard, its only rival in arboreal athleticism. "It's like a small puma," Dollar said, "with the tenacity of a mongoose."

I'm hoping for a fairly major flying overhaul in general.
The motionless hovering thing is sort of a bummer.

Sordid, 12 centimetres is NOT relatively small. That's relatively fucking HUGE. I come from Britain, where spiders don't bite you on the arse when you go to the loo, so 12 centimetres is about 4x the largest spider I've ever seen outside of a zoo.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
