New Release Feature Compilation
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:38:11 pm »

So we know that MOST of the new features are listed in the List Of Remaining Items, but a good many are not; for this reason, I propose that we compile all the new features in a single list, including those not in the current countdown List.

COMBAT!
-Completely revamped anatomy and wound system with scars, fractures, melting flesh, detailed descriptions and other tidbits adds more personality to your dwarves and makes combat even gorier!
-Upgraded weapons and armor bring deadly realism to the battlefield. Watch out for that Lead Hammer!
-Reworked squad controls for instruction drills, patrol schedules, kill orders, personal weapon racks and rotations gives you more control over your army and helps keep your soldiers in tip-top shape!
-Expanded weapons portfolio - arm your dwarves with looted weapons like whips and scourges!
-New healthcare system allowing splints, surgeries, hygiene, amputations and more Fun™ for after the battle!

ENVIRONMENT
-New poisons and ailments system add to the Fun™ list of hazards! Be ready for more than just fire breath!
-Brand new underground with Fun™ features GUARANTEED on any embark! Strike the earth!
-Regular/endless beast attacks and improved sieges give you more enemies to handle!

MANAGEMENT

-New "Burrows" system allows better fort organization, emergency routines and the isolated sub-forts!
-Better crafting controls end your stone-sorting worries! New materials like horn, ivory, pearl and more!

TECHNICAL
-On-the-fly zooming and automatic tileset adjustment! PNG support and translucent tiles!
-Upgraded keyboard customization with MACROS!
-Massive new moddability options!

That's all I got right now; feel free to tell me what I've missed. With luck, we can expound upon and improve this list.

Good idea warlord255
A resume of the next release is really usefull.
I think that Toady should reveal some more details from the game, it's so hard to wait all that time to play the next DF version!

Are you going to alter the first post as the repository?

Didn't I see something in the devlog about the drill mechanics also being a feature of civilian life in that you can now have dwarves take lessons in a profession from someone else who is more skilled?

If the d# stuff also applies...:

-native Mac, Linux versions
-improved framerate
-manual on-the-fly zooming/scaling of the play window
-png tileset support, translucent tiles
-enhanced keyboard support

Of course.

I now feel extremely boneheaded for forgetting the d# features and burrows.

EDIT: I should mention this; for stuff that is hidden in the devlogs, some copy-paste would be lovely to prevent rumormongering/false promises within the list.

When I look at the list... I think the most noticeable changes will be the burrows system, the new hospital building+skills, and the new squad management. (omitting the d# stuff) I think some people, outside of the DF community, who havent been following the devnow log will be unimpressed by this update :/ All the behind-the-scenes changes which lay the groundwork for future stuff will not be appreciated by them..

Yeah.

When goblins invade they used to see flashing "g"s and bearded faces, red 2s going everywhere and leaving trails of red .s and ;s.

Now they see flashing "g"s and bearded faces, red 2s going everywhere and leaving trails of red .s and ;s.

What they don't get is how awesome it will be when we're describing our images of Dwarf flesh melting in magma...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Quote from: Toady One
06/28/2009: Weapon types beyond the usual six are now supported by squads and other pieces of fortress mode. This'll mostly come up in mods, but you could also bump into a situation where you would really want to use the many scourges or bows/arrows that are around (if you find yourself under attack after a siege and short on weapons for whatever reason, say).
Dagger-wielding dwarves!

Quote from: Toady One
02/06/2009: Today was material breath weapons. For now, there can be forward puffs of gas/vapor/dust of any material, as well as clouds surrounding and liquid/solid glob projectiles. This can be extended to things like cones and so on later. I tested out these and the poison effects by making the berserk test dwarf breathe dwarven blood vapor that was linked to an inhaled poison effect that caused immediate pain throughout the body. He wasn't immune to it himself and ended up passing out before I did. The list of remaining items, updated.
Custom breath weapons!

That's all I found that doesn't seem to be on that list.

Also, what about the new HFS? That'll probably be a rather noticeable change.

Most importantly, lots of new stuff for modders to play with, too.

Most noteably the body systems and caste stuff.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

From the 2008 devlog:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Most of the 2009 stuff up to the discontinuation of the Number was combat related.

...While being reminded of this makes me feel all kinds of tasty evil, this is mostly summed up in the list under "material rewrite" and "MORE moddability!". At least, as long as the list is intended as a sort of advertisement/summary.
