 Completely walled in with a bunch of idlers for raising and taking down said walls.

I think 3/4 is a good guess, it'll also allow your dwarves to perform normal tasks while training swimming, me thinks.

Since the idea was to see what trapped carp would do to invaders, I assume you mean tasks including a pretty platinum studded lever for the more noble assignments.  :)

Make the entrance to your fort a bridge consisting entirely of down-stairs.

Then guard it with marksdwarves.

When the invaders get stabbed by enough bolts, they'll fall unconscious and fall down the "stairs," this preventing your marksdwarves from wasting precious bolts on incapacitated targets.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

 Actually, that would be a cool idea. Just a vertical crack down in the rock, the side you are on has a bunch of staircases and the opposite side comprises of fortifications.

 Of course, then one needs to deal with wagons.

I was thinking something more along the lines of: (standard top-down view)

Code: [Select]
########################
++++>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>++++
++++>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>++++
++++>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>++++
########################

With optional fortifications at strategic locations, but your idea's also awesome.

Make a bowl with a bridge as a wall. Connect bridge to lever. Suspend fort over centre of bowl. Fill bowl with water. When a seige appears, open the bowl. Bye bye seige.

personally, I dislike using magma in my traps. Why disavow myself of a perfectly good source of bone and skulls?

I have the "Indiana Urist Nightmare Hall" Deathtrap I had 2-3 group sieges happen, and they don't even reach the bear at the end.

I gotta continue that fort again sometime; as well as VF it and see just how nice that dining hall looks too.

Shooting elves with elf bone bolts is also fun, but you can't set orders to kill a friendly diplomat. However, that will be possible in the upcoming release. You can give orders to kill anyone who isn't (more or less) controlled by you. Like traders and stuff. Melancholic/mad dwarves? No idea.

A large room with an upright spear trap on every floor space.

A similar room above with a pressure plate on every floor space, each connected to the upright spear trap below.

Add kittens to the room above.

Upright Spikes aren't very strange, but a dozen or so in a 1-tile corridor doesn't just impale large goblin hordes, but may also add straggling fisherdwarves, pets and entire elven caravans that you forgot about after the siege alert to the kebabs.
