What does this symbol mean?
« on: September 06, 2009, 11:27:14 am »

Those symbols that look like partially dug rock west of my adventurer, what are they? They flash, and every time I move they zip of to another square far away from where I am, so I have never been able to see what they are for myself.

I apologise for poor image quality.

I think they're suppose to be clouds or fog.

Yea, large groups of clouds like dense fog and storm fronts.

The fog usually sits around over water unmoving, if you manage to get to them they arent really of much note, other than you can't see very far.

Stormclouds are usually just rain, sometimes they lower visibility as well, but not as much as fog.

You can also press 'c' to see even more clouds.  It's kinda distracting, but still cool to see how much Toady simulated.

Oh god, heavy fog on a glacier while being attacked by ice trolls...I actually felt scared when that happened.

That sounds awesome. That's what I love about Dwarf Fortress. Every moment is like a chapter from a fantasy book.

I think visibility was one square NSEW.  Had no idea how many attackers there were, or if I had actually inflicted serious damage on any of them who had been knocked away.

Note, you have one-square visibility when both your eyes are knocked out, so I think visibility is always +1 (representing you feeling around) implying your character is utterly blind in such fog.

Well, fog can get thick enough that if you hold your arm out straight ahead you can't see your hand so that would make sense...

wow, getting attacked by Ice Trolls in fog like that would be scary lol.

To be fair, the trolls won't be able to see either.

Now if they had [EXTRAVISION]...

I have this mental image of Urist McAdventurer groping around in the fog, on the glacier. "Let's see, that feels like ice, that's more ice, just open space there, and here is a... OH SHI..."

this is kinda off topic, but I just want to share it:

I once had a dwarf missing both his eyes, and suffering from brain damage. He became a sucessful Engraver before he decided to sleep on a stone-fall trap.

Must have been some of that new age super abstract stuff.

What you see when you examine it is just what the dwarves decided to put it down as when they had to describe it for the paperwork.

This is a masterful engraving of Two-Humped Camel cheese and Giant Olms by Urist McWacky. The Two-Humped Camel Cheese committing a depraved act. The Giant Olms are travelling. The engraving relates to the bruising of the elf Feya Ponygiggles' left hand, fourth finger by the dwarf Asmel Bodiceslaughtered during The Attack of Smirking in 178.

I think I extracted this graphical tileset abit wrong then.
Because when I push 'c'... all I see are flying pieces of roasted meat.
