Capturing live fish: broken?
« on: September 06, 2009, 09:17:09 am »

Right, in a bid to move my "meeting zone" out of the way(it was just inside the mouth of the fortress, which may have contributed to a child getting snatched), I constructed a great indoor zoo. Two rings of iron cages, two rings of clear glass terraria, the inner of which were turned into aquaria.

The problem is finding something to PUT in the aquaria.

I have wooden animal traps. Ten of them, in fact. I went to the fishery and gave four "capture a live fish" orders. Eventually, one of my fishery workers got to it.

Problem is... he wouldn't GO anywhere with it. He'd go to the traps, start hauling one, and then it would apparently transmute to have the mass of about 10 blocks of platinum nuggets. He would move a tile or two before he gave up and went to do something else, like eat/drink/sleep/take a break.

The fisherdwarves are working fine, and haven't complained about there being nothing to catch.

What could be going on?

You need to set up a fishing zone.

You need to set up a fishing zone.

This. Dwarves are smart enough to find an appropriate location when they go fishing, but they're not smart enough to do the same when ordered to catch a live fish.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

When you do manage to get one of your fishers to catch live fish again (be prepared to wait AGES) be sure to forbid the fish IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise some bonehead dwarf is going to come along and eat it live.

Catching live fish really needs to be separated from the fishing job or at least put on higher priority than regular fishing.

Actually, I'm curious. Once you catch a live fish, what can you do with it?

When put into aquariums (Glass cages) they work like decorations/pets.
Mog juice can be extracted from captured moghoppers.
