1 dwarf vs an ork siege?
« on: September 06, 2009, 08:12:58 am »

Hi,

I am playing dwarf fortress with the dig deeper mod, I also modded my kittens to drop raw adamantine when killed. (Oh the lovely joy, you'll never kill them, since they duplicate, and I'm a cat-lover :)... The orcs on the other hand... are not.)

I got my fortress wiped out and all my kittens were killed (about 20)
This caused me to find a whole lot of adamantine in the cage.
Now I wish to equip one dwarf with full (masterwork?) addy, so that he can stop the next horde by himself! :D
Should I wait for a blacksmith to reach legendary status?

How real is this dream? Or how real can it be made?

1 dwarf will never take more than 2 or 3 orcs on his own, if one gets into wrestling range he will pin the dwarf while the others attack. Plus 20 adamantine ore isn't enough for a full suit of adamantine if I remember correctly.

Forget the armor, build yourself fortifications, get a crossbow, seal yourself in, and shoot those arsewipes to death.

Damn, is it that bad? XD

I had complete fortifications, but they just shot my dwarves standing there XD (my defenses were rather flawed so I had to create fortifications while they were sieging.)

Lost the fortress a second time, somehow the orcs inside are friendly to me when I reclaim, then when there is a new siege they all turn bad all of a sudden.

How much do you actually need for a full suit or addy?

24 Adamantine wafers for a full set of addy plate mail (torso, greaves, 2 gauntlets, 2 boots, helm.)

Remember, this does NOT include a weapon and shield.

in an orc siege you need a tower filled with marksdwarves behind fortifications, or else YOU WILL DIE.

not really. I had 3 hastily drafted marksdwarves and a retracting bridge over a 1 z-level drop and fought off the whole siege. my drowning trap wasn't done yet

A single untrained marksdwarf with a basic wooden crossbow and bone bolts will kill *anything.* It might take a while, though. If you can put him where he can fire on the orcs indefinately, you'll win. Seal yourself in while this happens, of course.

Masterwork has double stats, so it's worth it.

Anyway, a LEGENDARY dwarf with good shield and weapon skill can potentially do something serious. But a normal dwarf, or just one that has no combat skills, is pretty screwed.

The best way for an aspiring Urist Rambo to take on a whole orc siege and win is with well positioned ballistas, in your case tipped with adamantine.

there is an old dwarven proverb: "how does one dwarf kill a horde of orcs? by pulling a lever"

forgive me if i misquoted it but i think i got the meat of it.

Don't forget, Morul's orcs aren't standard.

They'd make an ender goblin cry. They're sub-megabeasts. And Morul holds the record on the orcput with a 150 square hammer blow.

A legendary wrestler/armor user/shield user/weapon user (preferably blunt weapons, as sharp weapons stick) who's superdwarvenly tough/agile/strong can easily solo sieges of anything but snipers, and even then it's just a matter of luck.

That said, adamantine does not a champion make. Skill matters more than gear, especially with how fast dwarves can skill up. Start training like mad so you have a dwarf worthy of the adamantine armor.

(note: high-quality gear actually increases effective skill level. No idea if there is a cap, though)
