Though beauty is a very slippery concept to define, I realize what makes something beautiful to me.

What makes something beautiful to me is how it contrasts to what surrounds it. The wonderful stories and sense of community that arose during humanity's darkest hours. The stories of saints and paradise during the wicked oppression of the dark ages. The deep and disturbing works of macabre art, the bright and smooth blood on the rough and dark walls, the acts of intimacy between two souls in plight, and the light above alongside the darkness below. I give you an example of beautiful contrast, though you may be disturbed or openly disgusted:

Walking through a forest, or a field, during a full moon.

Seeing people do small, and overall insignificant, nice things for each other while receiving no benefit. Y'know, holding doors open or helping old ladies cross the street.
