I have a male and a female dragon. Wooden cage traps, go figure....

They are both on steel chains near each other.

In no uncertain terms, I wish to exploit their young and train them into guard beasts. I made sure the raws support this. Yes, I want war dragons followed by dragon roasts. "Smokey the dragon," it has two meanings .

But before that can happen, they need to mate. Why aren't they?

I've tried everything but Barry White. It's been 5 years and they just sit  around doing nothing. I want my dragon eggs/hatchlings, whatever. There should be some reason these overgrown lizards aren't a scaly suit of armor. They're interesting if firebreathing decorations, but still. One would think they would eventually feel the love or something whereby I exploit their bloodline....

Anyhow, how do I get them interested in one another?

A.  I believe that you can edit the child tag in and not require a regen for it to take effect, yes.  At worst, it's worth a try.

B.  That's entirely your call.  If your fortress dies a horrible, fiery death, well, that's just part of the Fun of the game.

Just keep in mind that the children will be able to breath fire just as much as the adults can.

I find myself wondering if they'll be born hostile.

If it works anything like invaders; hostile invaders will create hostile children, tame invaders will create tame children (though tamed invaders will still be treated as hostiles.

If the parents(Mostly mother) are tame, the child will be tame.

If you still can, you may want to consider placing cage traps near that, catch the baby dragons and train those right away.

[BUILDINGDESTROYER:2] means that your baby dragons will most likely destroy your things, which may include bridges over deep holes where dwarves are just walking over.

...It would be nicer if the dragons made eggs...that can be dragged to lava forge or a lava hatchery to hatch faster...and turn into vermin hunting mini dragons that act like cats, till they become adults and deside to act like real dragons and eat nonvermin instead...sees mini dragons burn down fortresses chasing after olms and cave spiders...maybe not.
Imagines a Dwarven Dragoneer that raises, trains, and brings dragons into battle....on second thaught.

Dragons dont mate...it would make them to over populated and Dragons would kill off everything, do to the lack of Dragonhunter profession.

The only dragons that will breed are the ones in your fort, so go ahead and breed them. But you may be screwed if a male and a female attack you at the same time and they it lives long enough to breed.

Would the [MEAGABEAST] tag prevent them from mating as well?

If you do add the Child token be sure to remove it before you gen a new world, otherwise the new world may be over run with dragons. And that multiple liter option...
