Who have you gotten to play dwarf fortress lately?

I just got my lil' sister to start playing DF too. ;D

On second thought, maybe that was a bad Idea...

At least that's better than none. Every single person that I have tried to get to play dwarf fortress has quit within the week. :'(

Yeah, that's basically been my experience as well. I held a big session once where I got three or four guys together and ran through a little tutorial with a projector. One got bored, one consciously decided to drown his dwarves, and one has been saying "Oh yeah! I should do that some time..." for about half a year.
Although, I did get a couple people at my old college playing, not sure if they still do though.

Got my roomate into it, and I swear he's doing even better at the game than I am now. He's been playing two days and utterly loves the game.

I've only one Fortresser to my name; he's a rather fanatic devotee, though, so I'll pretend he counts as two. We used to great each other with hails of "DWARF FORTRESS, [insert name here]!"

Ah, how sad that times must change just as I grow accustomed to them.

My fiancee wife is playing now, she loves it. I just had to find a good tutorial online and show her, and she was up and running.
But I stopped playing till combat reports works again or combat reports are implemented.  ???
Yeah, next update, I know.

I've been trying to get my siblings to join in, and even start a succession game between us.

So far, no luck.

:'( That would be awesome. Too bad just about everyone I know is sick of listening to me talk about DF...

I've got a fried that was very interested in the possibilities of DF, but it was too complicated for him, and, most of all, he didn't understand english at all. The both combined made it almost impossible for him to play the game (even with my help), so he gave up.

I tried to get a friend into it who I know likes to play difficult strategy games.  Even though I showed him the one of the all-graphics Mayday versions he was rather... troubled with how the game looks. And no, ASCII would have been even worse. One of my dogs died as I demonstrated him what a mature fortress looks like and the little dog sprite turned into a 'd'. He was like "Huh? 'd' , huh? I mean... 'd'... strange game!"  ::)

He actually tried to play the game and embarked near an ocean but gave up because he couldn't figure out how to play and what's going on... oh well.

A few weeks later we were chatting over Xfire and hat this interesting little conversation:

him: "So... are you still playing games? Haven't seen you do so since forever"
me: "Yeah, yeah I do. Like... Dwarf Fortress and such. Xfire doesn't detect them you know"
him: "No... I mean, like... real games"

I's his luck that he lives on the opposite side of our hometown, because, so Armok help me, I was about to go 'You strangle your friends throat with the +Rope Reed Sock+' on his ass.

DF is not for everyone, I guess.  :P

Everyone who thinks that ASCII games aren't real games should be strangled with a +rope reed sock+.

My girlfriend is a convert. She's actually had a fortress running longer than I have, but that's because she's patient and embarked without magma, on a non-freezing, non-carp zone with lots of everything un-fun.

A few other people have played on and off, but none of them are devotees.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

My convert count is 3 of 4.  I usually get the person I'm converting on voice chat of some kind and walk them through the basics.  It is kind of interesting when they start transitioning from "wtf is going on" to "this game is awesome" to "Oh, I already did that" when I'm giving them instructions.  The last person I was walking through had already figured out how to construct and place stone fall traps long before I brought it up.
