I decided I needed a bit more challenge so I modded in Deinonychus (size 32, no damblock, speed 500) and started a new fort. After a few years a herd of 20-30 Deinonychus arrived at the same time as a siege of 50 orcs (with 3 named ones
).
Deciding that their presence was befouling my map, I sent out my two most badass soldiers, each legendary in several weapons and equipped with masterwork adamantine crossbows.
Suffer not the enemy to live, that's our motto, isn't it?
In that line of thinking we sent out soldiers Rakust and Moses, each armed with crossbows to strike fear into our enemies (and maybe a bolt or two as well).
Each held a trusty crossbow made from the famed metal Adamantine, and had a quiver full of bolts. As it was deemed quite likely that they would run out of bolts before they did orcs we also left a cache of spare bolts outside the entrance, to be used at their leisure.
As they approached the meandering orcs Rakust spotted a particularly comfy patch of dirt and, decided Moses could handle the orcs on his own, fell asleep.
Undeterred, Moses charges bravely at the orcs, firing as he went: Almost every shot hitting a target.
He quickly exhausted his supply of bolts and charged, crossbow held high, straight into the middle of the group, bashing heads and crushing limbs as he went. It was a magnificent sight to behold.
He cut through the mob of orcs like a knife through butter, coming face-to-face with the leader. The large orc laughed mirthlessly and swung his maul, but Moses nimbly dodged and broke the orc's legs. The orc, despite being unable to stand, lunged again with the maul, knocking the crossbow from Moses' hands. Moses broke his neck with one hand. The remaining orcs, their morale shattered from the sight, fled in fear.
Moses just stood their, covered from head to toe in blood. Then he shook his head, blinked twice and picked up his crossbow. Glancing at the still sleeping Rakust he went to pick up more ammo.
On his way back to the cache Moses saw something out of the corner of his eye. He shifting his crossbow uneasily. Unable to tell what It was from a glance, but it was certainly big. And scaly.
Moses kept his eyes on the surrounding at all times while he reloading the crossbow, it would be shameful to be ambushed now, after such a glorious battle.
Then Moses suddenly remembered, Rakust! He was still asleep! Crossbow in hand he hurried back to his friend. As he neared the clearing where the battle had taken place he heard some odd whistling noises*. In the middle of the clearing, standing over Rakust's snoring frame were three huge beasts. They were taller than a titan and vaguely reminiscent of dragons, but instead of wings they had two gigantic claws, each the size of a greataxe, one on each foot.
Moses charged, yelling and firing as he went. The raptors immediately turned to face him, one of them getting a bolt through the brain for its' trouble. The remaining two hissed and charged at Moses. He felled one of them with a bolt through the chest, piercing both lungs and exploding the heart.
The final raptor was on him before he could blink. By God the things were fast! Moses traded blows, dodging and blocking the scything claws with his crossbow. After what seemed like hours the raptor stumbled slightly, giving Moses the opening he needed to bash its' head in with the crossbow stock.
Shaking in the aftermath of the fierce melee, he tried to wake Rakust.
Rakust opened his eyes to see his friend violently urging him to wake up and get out of here before 'they' return. Puzzled, he climbed groggily to his feet, rubbing the silt from his eyes.
Before he could ask what was going on he saw a dark shadow looming up behind Moses. Even as he tried to cry out a warning the raptor attacked, slicing through Moses' back and tearing his organs to shreds. Time seemed to slow down. Rakust could see the look of terror and surprise on Moses' face, not yet believing what had happened even as his blood fountained out the gaping wound in his back.
Snarling with anger Rakust brought his crossbow up to face the bemused Raptor. Before the beast could grasp what was happening Rakust let loose a bolt straight into it's reptilian face. The bolt slammed into the Raptor's eye, but wen't no further.
Rakust quickly ran from the shrieking beast, but even as he watched more seemed to fade in from the trees around him.
Shouting a battle-cry at the top of his lungs, Rakust charged at them. He felled two with bolts through their deformed skulls, and dropped another with a snap-shot along it's spine.
His quiver all but empty, Rakust swung the heavy crossbow like a hammer, snapping legs and outstretched arms like twigs. The ground behind him littered with broken corpses and dying, mutilated raptors. He was nearly back at the fortress. Nearly safe.
Suddenly a shape loomed out of the forest in front of him. It had a bolt stuck in its' eye.
Recognizing the hated foe who had killed his friend, Rakust raised the crossbow to fire his last bolt. For some reason the weapon felt strangely heavy.
He tried to pull the trigger that would send a bolt through the raptor's skull, but his finger would not tighten. He looked down to see the raptor's claw stuck through his chest, the end of it protruding from his back, severing his spine.
As the dwarf fell to the floor, a look of anguish on his face, the Raptor cried out triumphantly, the remaining members of its' pack echoing it's cry.
Suddenly one of the cries was cut short by a strangled yelp and a loud crunching noise. One of the raptors had been hit by a large boulder and had been crushed into the ground.
The lead Raptor sounded a yelping cry and the pack of reptiles began to sprint away from the falling rocks, trying to avoid being crushed. Some could not, or had their legs knocked out from under them.
As he watched the raptors flee, shrieking unintelligible noises into the night, Mayor Shorast sighed. Rakust and Moses had been the fort's finest fighters, and their loss would be a hard one to bear.
He signalled the catapult crews to stop the bombardment, the raptors were now far out of range of any siege engine, and there was no sense in wasting any more stone.
Next time, he vowed, they would be ready. "Next time..." he muttered as he looked over the plans for the magma cannon...
*yes, yes it a reference to Jurassic park.
The raptor did indeed get a name. zasitvagush, KnifeKiller. damn him.
Roughly how does size affect attack power? Both the soldiers were killed with a single attack, which they failed to dodge.
