Try harder Org.  You need to install the program, then run the program, then open the module.

I already knew there was a guide, I'm just making a general statement that I need to read the instructions first.

Yes, they did. That's why the download isn't on the v40K site anymore.

Anyway, the one usually used is Vassal 40k, not v40k.  Vassal 40k is the one I use, and you can find it all over.  Easiest would probably be /rs/, if you're not afraid of taking a stroll over to the chans.

I'm trying to sculpt a (cloaked) marine from scratch.
Think I'll just use a helmet and not a face, else it may end uplooking like that fugly grimdark guy a few pages back.

Didn't make a sketch, or get reference mat., so the pose is ... lame. :/

You should make a mold of a batman, then make a clear plastic batman and call it a cloaked IG soldier. Done.

Not what you were looking for, but done.

Fuck it, I had a long rant on how vassal40k was fair use, making that cease and desist letter illegal (if I remember right, there's actual recourse that can be taken in punishment of fraudulent cease and desist letters; at least in the US), but how the devs probably couldn't afford a legal battle against the unholy forces of darkness GW can amass against them, and so on. But fuck it, the hell would that achieve?

Anyways, I'll try to set up vassal with the "vassal 40k" file, I apparently have v40k v5.2 from when I went looking for a 40k engine for it, whenever that was... It would be interesting to try to play a game with it (assuming I pick up enough 40k rules to play, I obtained the rulebook and a number of the latest codexes around the same time, never touched them.) :/

Can my Toasters join the fray? It's been awhile and they're starting to get bored.

Oh wait, look at that.  It is v40k.  My non-euclidean foot has been inserted in my mass of tentacles, don't worry.

5.2 is the one I'm using, and I believe it's the last one before they got the axe.  And yeah, regardless of the validity of the cease and desist, GW has enough money to bludgeon any small party they want into legal submission, so it doesn't matter.

The rules are pretty simple though, the only part I'm having a little trouble swallowing is the allocation of wounds and such to mixed groups, but I'll run a solo game or two once I'm finished with the rules and I'm sure it'll make more sense then.

Does anyone with Vassal know how to use Scatter Dice?  I can't figure it out.

owner chooses casualties/assigns wounds right? Leaving most valuable troops immortal...as long as squadmates last. :)

Free to agree to alternative rules before battle comences though, could say: "12 miniatures, 2 with flamers: rethrow wounds(or hits), sixes hit a flamer."
Would become  more difficult to calculate odds with uneven numbers of troops, not captured in standard dice.... can agree to round up to nearest d6-able odds.  (enemy more likely to target heavy weapons. or less able to take cover)
etc.

edit: skulkingsculpting / modding
I thought sculpting large folds of cloth would be easy. Turns out I need practice. Small detail I can do, but the large hunks won't cooperate. (heh, that's what the sister of death said about the ogrynn.)
Removed foot to improve stance, added detailed uppertorso folds, rope-belt.
-I'm leaning towards using a plastic helmet head. A bald head under a hood would look cewl too, but then I'd have to carve away part of the torso and redo the cloak also.

GreyHunter->Longfang conversion is progressing fine too.
gave him a trademark belt, filed off the winged skull from his shin and applied a bit of GS to become the inertial dampeners or whatever they are....
Think I will add a wolftail to his helm too. :) maybe a fur kilt... not sure.

I'm sad because I cannot find a loose bionic leg I cut off a wolfguard(?) model I had double. Wanted to use it in another longfang. :(

Models can hit a unit they cant see, so if they cause 5 wounds and can only see 5 members of a squad, then all of them die.

Unless one of them has two wounds.
