In any case, after a Tyranid swarm consumes a planet, and all biomass is consumed, all of the Tyranids throw themselves into reclamation pools to be themselves digested and re-used by the hive-fleet, including everything they ate. It's this digested goop of Tyranids and everything else on a planet that is converted into more Tyranids aboard the Hive Fleet. So; while at no one time are there truly massive number of Tyranids, relative to their typical numbers, their potential numbers at any given time are much greater.

Unless Tyranids don't care for laws of physics, that doesn't help them much.

So what happens is a fleets numbers are huge, when traveling from planet to planet, but when they arrive there numbers grow enormously?

Effectively, yes.

Think of it as a large tanker of plastic, with a mould on the end, creating little plastic toys when you open the valve.

And then think of those models fighting other models, and all of them jumping back into the tanker and melting.

This is how tyranids work.

So basically, the Tyranids' motto is, "Conservation of Energy is for suckers."

Anyway, to get this thread back to a semblance of productive conversation-  I haven't played the game in years, but I know there's a group that plays in my area.  I'm thinking of getting a Chaos Marine army.  Thoughts?

If you want, i can probably tell you where to get the codex from.

Oh, and what legion were you thinking of doing?

I have the Codex already, please do not advertise copyright infringement in open discussion.

I wasn't planning on using any particular legion, instead inventing my own band of freebooting space pirates.

Fun fact: Heretic come from the ancient Greek hereticos, which means 'able to choose'.

Thus: Chaos = Democrats.

I said Space Pirates didn't I?  I'm pretty sure I said Space Pirates.  They'll look pirate-y, with random colors, decorations, lots of ugly swords, and I if discover I have a knack for greenstuff molding, the Warmaster will have a wicked cool plumed hat.  Jolly Rogers everywhere.

I'm planning to make the infantry out of a combination of Chaos and Loyalist Marines, the Iron Hands box for the bionic bits, and maybe some WH Fantasy figures for added awesome.  The Rhinos (because why not have Rhinos) will be made from a mix-n-match of Rhino and Chimera parts with added plasticard, which I saw done on some guy's website and it looked great.

Space pirates, you say? If you're going for a ramshackle look, you could use any left over Ork bitz.

The ponytails from the Ork boxes would look quite nice on the Space pirates.

Better than the current chaos ones at least, i assume you are making as many non-hemeted as possible?

P.S, Why not use traitorguard if you want pirates? Surely they would be easier.

And they'd make more sense, as Imp. Guard turn tail all the time.

Because I don't want to paint 100+ models.  Not to mention that Marines and Guard don't play anything like each other, and I like the way the Chaos Marines work for Space Pirating more than the Guard.  Like melee, or bikes.

I like how there was a very brief discussion about the laws of physics before everyone realised that 40k couldn't possibly care less about such boring and inconsequential things and moved on to more sensible discussion.

If you really want to go the whole hog with ramshackle space pirates, i'd suggest grabbing chaos marines, traitor guard and orks and mixn' and matchn' the parts. I know a guy who did something similar with Tau, Traitor Guard, Orks to create a piecemeal IG army that had spent so long operating behind enemy lines it was using enemy technology (it's own tech having been destroyed or worn out long ago). The result was pretty neat.

Also, there's a fairly good chance there'd be Orks allied with your Space Pirates anyway.
