I'm fine with people being 'different' and all, hell I do it myself and I don't plan to stick with my Space Marines forever but what I hate is when people look down on others for being 'mainstream'.

The usual kind of looking down on is the same kind you get when the pro gamers look down on the people who play easy mode. Space Marines are effectively the easy mode for 40k; it's almost impossible to build a truely ineffective army with them, they cover all the major bases pretty well and have a unit that fits almost every role. Playing almost any other army is noticably harder (and sometimes impossible), requiring substantial knowledge of skill and tactics that you often don't need for SM's.

Note that if you can prove you actually know what you're doing, people won't look down on you for going SM. But the vast majority of SM players have no goddamn clue and so by default most people assume SM players are idjits.

Ah. Generalization. I hate that too.

To combat this, I'll have to actually become a good player.

Dark Eldar!

I don't know anyone who actually seriously plays Dark Eldar as their main. You'd have to be insane, and not the good kind of insane. We're talking underpants on head insane.

At least they wouldn't have to roleplay. Reading some of the weapons makes me shiver.

Dark Eldar as Hard Mode is still a special case though.  Their codex was crap when it was new and is now a dozen years old with an update not due until maybe late next year.  Power Creep has eaten them alive and spit out their bones.  However, that Fighting Tigers guy still runs his Dark Space Elfs, and manages some level of success by pulling out every dirty trick in the book, which is actually quite fitting.

One of the only good things out of that codex (which I think is the oldest that GWare still selling now that orks have been done) is there dark lord (or whatever main HQ) has accesse to a piece of equip that can kill any psychers in you're oponents army.

I have a friend who played dark elder but he's stoped playing now.

you should play what you like the look of imo

space marines (when i used to play) where the good allrounders. or very good all rounders, they are pretty versatile and noob friendly also their points per model quite pricy so your army wont be to huge.

ive got a box of various 40k and regular warhammer minatures im trying to jetison on ebay atm. The bids over but its been three weeks and my buy hasnt arranged a pick up yet so im going to relist it in a few days. I suppose i could dig through it if my current buyer doesnt pay up) and see if theres any marines (its mostly ork remains and imperial guard) and post em too you, providing you have a uk address. (ill do world wide address if you pay for it).

edit just had a quick dig round theres atleast 4 spacemarine scouts (probs a few more), almost everything else is non marine or non 40k

I haven't been able to get any vomit this release. Not any I can pick up, at any rate.

If I am to start on an assault-oriented Blood Angels army, do you think buying 2 x Assault on Black Reach for a starter is a good idea?

Compared to buying 2 x Space Marine Battleforce set, I lose:
- 2 x Rhinos
- Tactical Squad (10 marines)
- Assault Squad (10 marines)
- Scout Squad (10 marines)

but I gain:
- 2 x Dreadnaughts
- 2 x Captain (any reason to field both???)
- 2 x Terminator Squad (5 marines each)

I calculated the cost per point (in $A):
2 x Assault on Black Reach (total cost $230) -- $0.19 just for the Space Marine models, very good value for money. I also get the Rule Book, dices, etc.
2 x Space Marine Battleforce (total cost $300) -- $0.27

Why two of each set you may ask? Because I aim to field a 1000- to 1500-point army and one set is not enough. Any advise is welcome.
Two Captains for:
Extra Hard Hitting, although not really with AOBR unless you do a conversion(Power Fists FTW)
Better Leadership in a Squad

The general over-poweredness of SMs made me want to make a highly specialised army out of them, so JUST melee (best gun - standard bolter), or JUST ranged (Best melee unit - the HQ).

Never got round to it though.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

You're trying to call toasters overpowered? Have you ever actually played 40k?

HAVE YOU?

Also, Akigagak, the most powerful Troop gun is the Tau gun. Str 5 AP 5

Monolith is so cheap. You MOVE troops away when you deepstrike, and then get to shoot them all. How is that not cheap?
