You need the rule book, and codex for your army. Then you need models.
For orks, you want to get into close combat AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Orks suck at shooting, but they are the best melee infantry, if used properly.

A fairly standard Ork-y tactic is to just swamp your enemy with bodies. If you have enough orks, enough of them will survive to tear whatever it is you're fighting apart.

Otherwise, do much the same thing, but this time with a couple squads in Trukks or Bikes as a fast response team, taking down anything with big, scary guns.

I've played against them once, and it was against an all trukk army. I got torn into very small pieces. Took out his Meganobz with a nice Meltagun volley, though.

Finally got some time to go to my local Games-Workshop and play a few games of 40K.

I got my ass royaly handed to me but damn it was fun after all this time of just having my models on my desk.

The orks seem good, but how do the marines play out ?

If you got a local store where you can sit down and paint or even play a few games, start with hanging out there, get a few models that inspire you and paint them, watch a few games to get a feeling for which armies style/artwork you like best.
Then buy a rulebook/codex and start collecting your own army.

I finally played against the Tau player.
It was a close game, but he fucked me over with his damned exploding crisis suits and jump jetting away during close combat.
He won 4 VP to my 2, but he won in the last turn by killing my WB and Nobz.
Also, he had some seriously retarded rules for vehicles.
I fired my deffkopta squadron (6 coptas) at one devilfish, but he said I only got one attack, instead of the 6 I should have. Next time, I'm fucking him over, and putting them in their own squadron alone. Then I'd have 6 deffkopta squadrons, and the six hits I should have had.

Wait wait wait exploding crisis suits? I don't remember that occuring, I probably could have won a few more matches if they explode. Or was that a particular upgrade...

Anyway is there still no word on when the next codex is coming out?

I would but there are no stores nearby me. I have decided to get the assualt of black reach so me, and my brother cna play a few games, but the type of army I am looking for is more ranged squad based army.

Then you don't want Orks because they are the polar opposite and don't even have the patience to aim, let alone plan ahead.

Ork tactics are generally simple. You put all your models on the board, and send them in the general direction of the enemy, leaving nought but chaos and destruction in your wake.

Look up some Space Marine tactics. They generally sound like what you are after. There are also Imperial Guard, if you like large based but still somewhat organised ranged, and even Tau if you're into that.

I did some reading, and I really like the Space Marines so I am going to go with them. My new problem now is getting the materials to make some stuff like buildings, cover, etc.

Most of the stuff you need can be found at a local Hobby Lobby or any similar craft store.

*Edit*
Anyone interested/experience in setting up a Mordheim campaign? There aren't any gaming clubs within 100 miles of my hometown so I'm rather desperate to get some play in.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Why because I chose marines ? Their tactics fit with the way my mind thinks. I prefer to use well planned ambush, and pincer tactics. I will use an analogy " I would prefer to use a Bolter than try to chop someone to bits with a very dull ming. "

Tactics and Marines only mix in one way.
That way is "HURP DURP WE CHAERG FOR TH EMPRAR."
That and GW loved SM more than anything else. Seriously, orks need some lovin'.
WE'RE STILL 4e THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

However, I am looking into making an Imperial Guard army.

However, I am looking into making an Imperial Guard army.
I remember when one of my brothers got annoyed at his predator, since our battle generally didn't have the points for it to see much action alongside his bikes, terminators, land speeder, two tacticals and devestator squad... and he felt it was underpowered. So my other brother who played orks said that he'd take it and we'd play it under special rules for a looted tank (I don't actually know where those rules came from, I suspect a little cheatery may have been involved, we were like that) years later when he spoke about his comment on the matter was "Slap some red paint on it, and it's Orky!"

But anyway, it really does kind of depend on how you play them, but spacemarines are generally designed to be versatile, and tough, expensive individuals, which means they're beaten by cheaper specialists most of the time... They're the toughest armies around, short of the necrons which just come as extremely small hard to kill armies that don't generally do much damage.
