Slight nitpicking; the Toasters want to harvest everyone's souls to feed to their star gods. And they don't want everyone's souls, they just want to cull the herd every now and then.

And the C'tan all wants to separate the Immaterium and the Materium.

Thereby destroying all warp-utilizing civilizations in the Galaxy.

edit: fix'd

All the C'Tan want to do that; only thing they're vulnerable to.

But I thought the Deceiver was the only one far enough with the Plan?

At any rate, fix'd, cause I'm not a WH40K player yet...

Well the Nightbringer is batshit insane and has about enough brains to work out where the nearest souls are and eat them, the Outsider is really batshit insane and locked up in a dyson sphere by the other C'tan and the Void Dragon is stuck in Mars, so the Deciever is the only one in any real position to do anything anyway.

Pretty much sums it all up.

Also fifth God of Chaos.

In the fluff, this guy is pretty fucking insane. The other Chaos gods actually fear him, and just a handful of his servants could turn back all 13 of Abbadon's Black Crusades at once, with their hands tied behind their back, sleeping. And on fire.

Who? Malal THE UNNAMED CHAOS GOD WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE EMPRAH ?

AND WHOSE NAME IS 'THE LOST GOD' OR 'THE OUTCAST GOD'?

Yeah. Much more hardcore than the other Chaos gods.

Wait. If Chaos have 5 gods, then C'tan is 5 too?

people often bitch about the metaplot (i know you guys arent, im speaking generally), but i kinda like it.

i mean, i dont like it that its changes so sweepingly over different editions of the game.  but i chalk that off to revisionist history in the imperium.

i do like the first edition metaplot, and how the third edition crap with the necrons and the ctan and the war-in-heaven brought the old ones back into it.  i like the suggestion that the tyrinid swarms are old one psychic / bioweapons (they were masters of bio-engineering after all) sent from another galaxy (the old ones did disapear and were thought to have retreated to another galaxy, after all) to fight the ctan (who are specially vulnerable to psykers, after all).

i dont really like the idea of missing or lost chaos gods.  the whole metaplot behind chaos and the warp is that its supposed to reflect the emotions of life forms in the physical world.  it was stable until humanity spread across the galaxy in the golden age, and only destablized once enough of us were out there thinking bad thoughts to have a negative impact on it.

chaos gods exist because people will them to exist.  if the emperor is a "lost" chaos god (i prefer him as an old one, but whatever) then it sort of shits on the idea of gods being reflections of our subconsious.  if he is just a man with the powers of a god, its because the collective will of the imperium of mankind (along with all those sacrificed psykers) wills him to have godly powers.

anyway, just my two bits.

While you make a good point about the Tyranids, if you ever use the words "metaplot" or "after all" I will murder you.

As for the Emperor, I don't see how anyone could think he is a Chaos god. Maybe he's a different god entirely, a kind that has been lost from the knowledge of the Imperium for millenia. As for Malal, he exists. His champions have beaten the shit out of things before, and they'll do it again. But the reason they're so powerful is interesting: My understanding is that because he has so few followers, he is able to give each follower more power. Thus, his servants are demigods in their own right and hold a power even a Bloodthirster would envy, in a few of the more powerful ones.
